Title: Another Elm Sapling Bow
Post by: Thunder on December 03, 2014, 02:16:42 pm
Here's another American Elm sapling bow of mine that I wanted to share, it's 58" ntn, 50# @ 25", 3/4" at the nocks and it's from a very small diameter sapling(http://i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh500/thundersdad/Elm%20Reflex%20Deflex%20Bow/20141202_182650-1_zps9jcvsrj4.jpg) (http://s1248.photobucket.com/user/thundersdad/media/Elm%20Reflex%20Deflex%20Bow/20141202_182650-1_zps9jcvsrj4.jpg.html)(http://i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh500/thundersdad/Elm%20Reflex%20Deflex%20Bow/20141202_183229_zpst9pgzb0h.jpg) (http://s1248.photobucket.com/user/thundersdad/media/Elm%20Reflex%20Deflex%20Bow/20141202_183229_zpst9pgzb0h.jpg.html)(http://i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh500/thundersdad/Elm%20Reflex%20Deflex%20Bow/20141202_184620_zpsnl33ujsk.jpg) (http://s1248.photobucket.com/user/thundersdad/media/Elm%20Reflex%20Deflex%20Bow/20141202_184620_zpsnl33ujsk.jpg.html)(http://i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh500/thundersdad/Elm%20Reflex%20Deflex%20Bow/20141202_184733_zpsrufkxcwf.jpg) (http://s1248.photobucket.com/user/thundersdad/media/Elm%20Reflex%20Deflex%20Bow/20141202_184733_zpsrufkxcwf.jpg.html)

Here's the rest of the pics. It has a weird knot in the middle of the upper limb that I left a little stiff, but it's a shooter. I've put over 500 arrows through it and it's still kicking.(http://i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh500/thundersdad/Elm%20Reflex%20Deflex%20Bow/20141203_114310-1_zpsfmov6fzr.jpg) (http://s1248.photobucket.com/user/thundersdad/media/Elm%20Reflex%20Deflex%20Bow/20141203_114310-1_zpsfmov6fzr.jpg.html)(http://i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh500/thundersdad/Elm%20Reflex%20Deflex%20Bow/20141203_114340-1_zpsvi1irnhh.jpg) (http://s1248.photobucket.com/user/thundersdad/media/Elm%20Reflex%20Deflex%20Bow/20141203_114340-1_zpsvi1irnhh.jpg.html)(http://i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh500/thundersdad/Elm%20Reflex%20Deflex%20Bow/20141203_114435-1_zps52hrvkib.jpg)[/URL[URL=http://s1248.photobucket.com/user/thundersdad/media/Elm%20Reflex%20Deflex%20Bow/tiller-02-1_zps8ggdzedg.jpg.html](http://i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh500/thundersdad/Elm%20Reflex%20Deflex%20Bow/tiller-02-1_zps8ggdzedg.jpg) (http://s1248.photobucket.com/user/thundersdad/media/Elm%20Reflex%20Deflex%20Bow/20141203_114435-1_zps52hrvkib.jpg.html)

That's the natural color of the cambium once it oxidizes. I take off the bark and selectively scrape off the cambium then coat it with a little polyurethane. The tannins in the cambium turns your fingers that color as well.  :)

Thunder, saw both your last  bows ya posted. Absolutely beautiful in all respects.....but I especially like them as examples of Eastern Woodland pattern bows. One opinion from an old man dont mean much but them 2 bows are really well made.

Great looking bow along with your other elm.  How long did you season them before working them down and or starting to tiller them?

Both of these saplings were debarked and sealed with polyurethane, then laid on a rack in a hot Houston Tx garage for about 3 months. Then I worked then down, seems to be long enough. I'm no expert, but it's worked for me.  :)
