Title: A couple of recurves
Post by: mikekeswick on November 16, 2014, 03:25:41 am
I got a couple of recurves finished up recently and seeing as I haven't posted any of my bows in a while I thought I'd show you them.
This first one is a sinew backed labernum. 43#@27 and shoots really nicely. t holds a 3 1/8th inch of reflex after shooting  :) Fast but I haven't had a chance to chrono it yet. It has a lovely stackless draw and it's quite nice shooting 43# after months just shooting my heavier hornbow.

And here's the other...self osage 52# @ 27 . This one holds about 1 inch reflex after shooting and is again very pleasant to shoot..no stack and a very flat arrow  :)

Nice bows as always Mike, I like the leather of that grip, has a nice aged look and lovely tight stitching, got an old school look.
That Laburnum is V handsome.
BTW, do I recall you saying Buddleia makes a decent bow? I've been cutting back some in our garden and got a 5' x 3" piece.

Cheers Del, umm I don't think it was me who told you about buddleia. I've never used it. Got to be worth a try though!

Nicely done alround, Mike. And as the others said the leather work is great also!

Some questions:
any chance for f/d pics?
is the sinew that thin or transparent on that laburnum, I cannot see it  -- perhaps my eyes?
why did you back that Laburnum? seems it is long enough to live without backing?
how long are that bows?

good to see bows from you again

Ooooo, Mike.  This is only tye second time I remember seeing your work, and I am a little impressed.  I really like the geometry of the side profile.

Also, I've never even seen laburnum worked, and that wood is GORGEOUS.  It has that inner luster I get and love sometimes in black locust.

Awesome work.  I agree with the rest, superb leather work.  I dig the rustic look of it.

Terrible, both of them! Clearly belong on a shelf somewhere where people don't know what quality craftsmanship look like. Since I'm a nice guy I'd be willing to pay shipping and get rid of them for you ;)

Really beautiful bend on both bows and I do agree with all that the leatherwork is superb. I can't help but point out that the Osage is just my weight ;D

I promise i'll get the FD photos today! My car's timing belt decided to snap at the weekend...so i've been a bit busy trying to source a new engine....
Thanks so much for all the nice comments. Once I get the photos i'll answer all the questions, my new dog is squeaking at me to be taken out for a run and I can't concentrate right now!

Sexy curves!!  I had the same thought as bubby, as that libur 8)num looks to be bending heavy in the inner limbs, but if it is holding that much reflex, then enjoy that super smooth drawing recurve!!!

Like others have said, your leatherwork really sets them off.

Hi and thanks again.  :)
simson - I backed it because I intend to learn the thumb draw properly this winter and this bow was made to handle a 29 or so draw. Yes the sinew is very thin so it probably isn't doing much at my normal mediterranean draw of 26.
Okie64 - Yes I did stain it but then buffed most of it off again so that it just makes the grain stand out.
Bubby/Carson I know what you are saying but if you look at the unbraced and braced pics the upper limb has more reflex than the lower in the mid/outer limb (shoddy heat gun work!) so it always looked stiff. It showed no set at all inner limb during tillering but the outer took a bit, so I guess it isn't as bad as it looks. That's the other thing with heating these sort of shapes in ...if you don't get them perfectly match limb to limb then full draw always looks a bit wonky. Anyway that's my excuse and i'm sticking with it  ;) ;)
