On our to way town Annette and I saw this possum walking in a tight circle. He clearly had been doing this for hours. 45 minutes later on our return home we found him continuing to walk in circles. Now we know how potholes are made in Iowa.

Isn't that interested. If you bring him back home you could have a pond that is twice as big next spring. ;)

I bet he was hit by a car and has a brain injury.

may have gotten a foxtail in the ear. I had a dog once that got a fox tail and walked in circles for a while.

I thought my X and I were the only ones to ever see this.
She came to my house and told me about the possum down the
road walking in circles and she wanted me to go look too.
I said it would be gone by now but it wasn't.
It was at night so I couldn't see a trace of a car hitting it but I suspect that
it is what happened. It sure was strange.

I have seen a few rabid animals. Don't know about all symptoms but the coon and foxes I saw didn't circle.
They more or less wandered like zombies and would attack if you got near.

Rabies is extremely rare in opossums. When I followed Farmer John's link to his video, there were a bunch of other videos of possums doing the same thing.
They are strange. I would go into details about how strange they are, but this is a family website and some of it is pretty graphic. Suffice to say, they are strange.

JW do you think they do it for some cool strange reason?
My X raised some babies that fell of a momma's back when we
were removing old building slabs.
When they were like teenagers, her favorite female started rolling the lawn grass up in her front feet after chewing it off. Then passed it like a conveyor to her hind feet (paws) lol and then to her tail. The bundle looked like a bundle of sticks on an African or Asian woman's head.
She could not get it through the door of the shelter they slept in.
This behavior to me alone is fascinating. Not to mention that her frustration was
alleviated by her siblings who got behind her and the bundle and forcefully pushed the entire package into the shelter. BTW the X was from Moscow where possums are revered like Americans love Koalas.

After reading these posts I think it is imppossumable to know what was going on. It didn't survive the night.

My grannie had chickens, then she had chickens and possums, then just possums. I dont like possums.
