Title: Ax handle recommendations?
Post by: JoJoDapyro on October 26, 2014, 02:40:31 pm
Great party Saturday night. Except for my ax. I now need a new handle. I have a larger pear log. What do you think about a pear handle for the ax? Thanks again for all the knowledge that is freely given here.

Typically hickory or ash was used for tool handles. Give the pear a try and let us know how it works. If the pear is big enough for a bow it would be a shame to make an ax handle from it though.  ;)

Not quite long enough for a bow. The part of the tree I got was long enough, but had a giant hidden knot mid limb. I'll give it a shot. Another excuse to use the band saw.

Hickory dickory Doc You'll need two axes if you use a pear.

I used a piece of Iron Wood (HHB) for a splitting Maul handle once - lasted forever. Bob

Here are the woods I have on hand. Osage (one stave. will have a hole in the limb), Pear (enough for an ax handle), Pine, Juniper (Utah), Apple, Maple (knotty) And Russian olive (Not thick enough for an ax handle). I looked at 2 places yesterday and neither had an ax handle (Cal Ranch being one of them)

I just wanted to make something  >:D, the pear is HARD. But I did end up working on 3 different bows yesterday. So, I got that going for me!
