Title: Really?
Post by: JoJoDapyro on September 23, 2014, 09:38:03 pm
I go in to work today, it is a normal day at work. I go to inspect some work that needs to be done.

I pull up to the home that needs some curb and gutter repaired and I see this.

The home owner let me take a chunk. Any idea on what type it is?

Wow for me that would be a gold mine. I have hacked and smacked so many different kind of rocks. Regular knapping rocks when found are sure a pleasure to work with.

I am fairly certain that it isn't from Utah. The homeowner didn't know, she said it was there then they moved in. I think it is not very workable from freeze/thaw throughout the winters here. Too bad, it is good looking.

I am no expert but would have to guess some kind of jasper. Looks real simular to a pc someone brought to Pappys last yr, I also ended up with a small pc from a earlier point trade. I posted a pic earlier this yr.

Yep, that is it almost to a T. Orange bands, some dark bands, a little bit of crystal in it. Very hard. I will be working there again today. I'll see if I can't find another larger chunk to destroy tonight.

That stuff looks like it has "river polish" that makes the outside look shiny.  I'll bet it's tough and course grained when you start getting into it.  Worth a try, though.  Most good jasper is rounded nodules, not blocky.

It looks like jasper to me also. A lot of jasper chips like candy after it's heat treated.

the chunk I got spalled well... Well for me is about 2 usable spalls per pound. I'll see if I can get another piece tomorrow.
