My girlfriend and I took a little road trip yesterday to look at some old osage fence posts and were not disappointed. The gentleman who had these was a delight to meet and talk to. He was a bit of a collector, into the old world stuff. He has an old cabin on his property that he and his wife built and rent out, sort of like a bed and breakfast.
But onto the osage... We opted to go for the big logs because of the amount of good wood we'd get from them compared to the smaller logs/fence posts. These were cut over 60 years ago and had been in the barn for over a year. Once we knocked the ends off, we were pleased to strike gold. Couldn't be a happier man than I am right now, lol.

Nice score. Looks like lots of good bow wood there.
-
Wow. Score!!
-
Oooooo, I'm jealous!
-
Boah, wish you were my neighbor ...
-
Man I wish I had some of that
-
I'm not looking forward to having to split it in the least, believe me. Going to try selling a few staves on ebay to recoup expenses and maybe go back for more if it's still there.
-
Wow, very nice!
-
Actually it's been my experience that very well seasoned osage splits a lot easier than the greener stuff...I don't think you will have that much trouble with it. Of course, I've been wrong about a few things...anyway, I hope it is relatively bug-free!
-
There's not much bug damage in woods here in NE Ohio. At least from what I've seen. Aside from a bit of hecking on the outer edge, they look really clean.
-
I would say that is "season wood" can't wait to see some bows from that stuff...... Oh by the way nice haul! :) where do you live?? ::) ;D

Nice haul! That stuff looks like it will split fairly easily. Hope the checks don't go to deep. Post some pictures of the staves all split and cleaned up.
Was that the stuff from Bellevue?
-
Thanks, Clint. Most are only 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep. The deeper ones are going to be split points, I think.
-
Nice haul! Looks like some prized staves in there.

Bad news is... you have a ton of work ahead on you turning those rock hard logs into bows.
Good news is... it will be worth all the sweat.
Nice score, and yes I'm jealous too. :)
-
I'm jealous too. Too bad they used tamarack and cedar for posts where I come from, nobody has ever heard of the word Osage around here, except me. The Osage tree I planted in my backyard will be ready for my successor(s).
-
GF opted to accompany on osage-gathering road trip? Hmmmmmm, may have a winner there!
Good catch on the logs too!
-
Lol, she actually was the one who insisted we make the trip. She didn't have the slightest problem keeping up with me moving these big logs around.
-
We buckeyes are blessed with a lot of osage. Awesome haul.
-
Dude! :o :o :o
Let me know when you decide to sell any of it.
-
Very nice score, lots of work in that pile but should make some grat bows. :)

I was a bit skeptical when I saw the first pictures of the badly weathered wood but the butt ends show a bunch of usable osage. Osage always has a surprise waiting for you inside, seldom good, I suspect you will find a lot of such when you work down the wood. There are definitely a few bows residing in your wood.
-
Well, there's good news and bad news. The bad is that the log I split has some twist in the staves. The good news is that they all have some snake to them. I'll take it! Lol :)
-
Nice Score!! That is some nice looking snake! That picture of you and your girlfriend smiling says it all...Happy wood hunter and huntress!!!
-
Thanks, Carson. This gives me plenty of opportunities to use the take down handle and other stuff I got from you. :)
-
Yep, you a good haul there. And a lot of work to do!
