Title: Wooden Sculpture: Pan & Syrinx
Post by: Jodocus on August 15, 2014, 04:26:40 am
Just in case anyone noticed I post only few bows these days: here's one of the reasons. There's more, for example I just broke a nice one while tillering it this week  :'( . But mainly, this sculpture and the prep work took me most of the lousy summer. But I'm quite happy with the time spent.

It's from a freshly cut oak, about two feet tall and 1 1/2 across. The Brown colour was done with muddy water (very little), and comes from the iron reacting with something in the oakwood. Then I drowned it in linseed oil, to slow evaporation and cracking. It will never get real dry, as the roots are still in the ground. I cut through the sapwood all the way around, though.

As usual, no machines involved, thus I claim primitive status for it  ;D the iron tools don't count, I hope...

Also, I got me a little blog that is strictly primitive (apart from being a website displayed on some computer...), have a look, some stuff was one here, too.

Oh, and how does archery come in? The flute he plays, Syrinx, is said to have hunted the woods with the most beautiful hornbow around!

That's pretty dang cool, I think it would make me jump if I ran into it out in my woods ;)

Very cool! 8) 8)  The iron in the water, is probably reacting to the tannin in the oak.

No racoons around here, but boar and roe. These, as herd animals, are in pan's domain and so it would only be right if he scares away any hunters.

Also, it is said that if you disturb the silence during the midday hour, he will see that some branch falls on your head.

Glad you like it!

Outstanding. Beautiful carving Jodocus, I hope it endures for many years for others to stumble upon and enjoy. I can see why you haven't posted a bow in awhile, that had to take quite some time to carve and must have been a very
satisfying project to complete. :)

I figured someone with two just two toes should be perfectly fine with four fingers (including thumb)... ;)

Well, as long as he can do what is necessary, heck, even ET didn't have five fingers, and look what he could do, and Mickey Mouse only had three.  So, I guess it is fine, which could be the reason he plays a pan flute, rather than the standard flute, or fife. ;)  None the less, beautiful work.  Neat, 8) to put it in the woods like that, for an unexpected art experience, for some one hunting, or hiking. ;) 8)
