I found these snake skins on an internet auction site, they are freaking huge! I only paid $7.25 for these two and a 6' eastern diamond back. The bow in the picture is 67" long, and the tape measure is locked at 10'. Does anyone recognize what type of snakes these are?

Reticulated python.
I have one that is very similar that I got back in the 1970s and it was quite old then. I think the one I have was urine tanned, a simple tanning solution used world wide.

+1 on what pat said
-
well what ever it is I'm sure its mostly referred to as the WhatTheHellIsThat! snake. lol

Hahahaha! ;D ;D ;D

I don't know if you guys remember huaraches, braided leather sandals from Mexico. The leather in them was urine tanned and had the same texture as the python skin I have.
-
Well personally I think would look great on the back of an osage bow
-
It would only be decorative and if they are like the sin I have the leather is very sponge like and would absorb lots of glue and finish adding physical weight without any added performance.
-
They are only .025" thick, would they really soak up that much glue? They don't seem very spongy
-
That third pic looks like it would make a mighty big bacon sandwich. Mmmmm with cheese ;D ;D ;D

I think you've got some kind of rock python. They live in both Africa and India. That one looks stained so it's hard to tell.
-
Yep, Rock Python is my guess too.
-
Are those sheds? They kinda look like it...they look dull and lack any color, wrinkled, and look more brittle and thinner than an actually skinned skin... ???

Lol! Made my morning.
Looking at the pattern I'm wondering if it isn't burmeses, or rock python. What state did it come from?
-
They are old and a bit brittle, but they are not sheds. I believe they were bought at an estate sale in Illinois.
-
From looking at the pic. I would say what you have there Falcon is the rare gianormus bacon snake. Now I'm hungry, anyone have a giant skillet? :D

Bacon is the duct tape of food
-
Yep it is Rock python (Python sebae) The color on the skins are from age/tanning.
If i remember correctly they can be around 22-24'.
Weird that one is skinned from "wrong" side
-
Does anyone think .025" is too thick for a backing?
-
Aaron, think about what you want this skin to do. If you just want it to look good on a mediocre bow, then by all means use it. If you want to dress up a nice bow and maintain performance, this is not your skin. This python "leather" can be used on a bow, but it is not ideal. What you are look ing for is rawhide - skins that have only been air dried. Leather is far too porous and stretchy to do anything but cause problems on the back of a bow. If you need a set of skins, hit me up and we will work something out.
BTW- that leather will be great for many projects so don't throw it away!
-
Got it, thanks Scott. I have a few rattlesnake skins I can use right now, but I might take you up on those skins on the future.
