On my way home from work yesterday after a windy rain storm and there in the road is a downed Hickory tree. About 10 or 12 inches in diameter, nice and straight, but with a few branches growing out of it.
I have never cut Hickory from the tree. From the books, it looks like black Hickory, but I could be wrong. Any tree id ideas?
All the groups have 7 leaflets and are consistent size. The bark is medium rough.

From looking at the end cut it doesn't look healthy.

I don't know what hickory usually looks like, but this tree definitely had some rot at the base.

Looks like good wood for the smoker. Ribs mmmmmmmmmmm........

Maybe some rustic bandsaw boxes with that random mix of heartwood and sapwood.
