Chop sticks? ;) that's pretty narrow man, even for a kids bow

My bad. I meant 3/8 thick.

I sorta want a bandy handle bow.

I haven't made a board bow yet, but 3/8" seems a bit thin. IPE is some string stuff, maybe someone will chime in here soon.

3/8ths is ample thickness. A backing of ash around 3/16ths thick and some spliced in recurves to give a bit of extra length. Also i'd use a powerlam around 16 inches long with that thickness of belly.

60" is pretty short, but it might be doable.
Some time ago I had an ipe board that was 61" long (after that, the grain ran out) and the guys here
suggested a bendy handle, 1 1/4" wide at the fades tapering to 1/2" with a pyramid design.

I'd use 1/8" hickory backing and build a bendy handle bow. I think you could easily build a hunting weight bow. You could do a pyramid or go out a few inched from the handle before tapering to tips.

I would use about a 14" power lam, hickory backing and make a moderate r/d design.

Ipe makes great bendy handle bows.

Could someone explain a powerlam to me please?

A power-lam is a thin, tapered piece of wood that goes between the back and belly at the handle. It stiffens the handle area.

3/8" x !.5" will make you at least a 50ilb bow at 60".....with that width it may go up to 60lb .....thats with a stiff handle....no problem......provided you back it of course....I'd use the boo....will make an awesome bow

Back that and you'll
get a respectable bendy handle out of it.

Man I wish I had a bird  :(

Lemme show you the scars she gave me and we'll talk about it.

Boo backed and curvatures induced.  This may turn out to be a very interesting thread.  Oh, the suspense!

That's Elise, the Black Hills Raptor Center's 25 yr old redtail hawk.  Total diva when the camera comes out. General pain in the sitting muscles otherwise, and possessor of my heart.

She's beautiful.  I have been trying to talk my wife into letting me get a Falcon!  So far, no luck.
