My brother in law built an ipe deck on his vacation place about 10 years ago. He kept all the board end cuts and scrap in his pole barn. Last summer when I was up there I seen them and asked for a chunk. He handed me a 6" wide by 39-40", 3/4" board. I ripped two 1 1/4" slats and spliced them at 73" total. Then sawed out another 2 chunks to build up a deep handle and the remaining bit was used for overlays. The backing is very thin hickory I planed down, its 1/4 sawn. I've always wanted a Hill style bow, so that's what I aimed for from conception. The entire project is held together by TB3 wood glue. I glued in reflex with clamps, so the bow didn't take measurable set. What I lost I gained back in tension from the hickory. It has a comfy 1 1/8" of reflex after several hundred shots. The finish is Deft satin in a rattle can. The very back of the bow is stained chestnut brown, edges are white still. The grip is chocolate elk leather Drew gave me. The strike plate is also elk hide, but much thinner. The string is a 10 strand D97. See, I don't hate boards.
I attached two full draw shots. One canted with an arrow and one as straight up as I can get.
69" ntn, bottom limb is a 1/2" shorter
1" wide
4" handle
4" fades
-3/8" tips
The belly is a shallow "D" shape, basically an American long bow.

Nice job Chris. Your expertise obviously isn't just in the osage area!
-
Sweet looking bow right there, board bow or not! :)
-
That bend is immaculate... 8) Excellent work Chris...
Don
-
Very nice!
-
Nice Hill style bow, Pearlie. Can you shoot it like Howard did? ;)
-
Cool bow,perfect tiller! 8)
-
Nice lumber bow! ;D
-
Great looking bow Chris. Handle looks a bit uncomfortable but the tiller is nice, everythings a tradeoff! ::) - Cody
-
Nice Chris! Has that true to the Hill style look and tiller, bet it's an accurate, smooth and pleasing shooter too.
Finish work is top notch as well, doesn't look a bit like scrap lumber now that it has come to have a life of it's own
-
Even Mr. Hill would say that bow looks good!
-
Hey thanks a bunch guys! Most of you will probably get to shoot it soon enough. It has a bit of handle buzz going on, think its the lack of silencers on the string. Im shooting 80-85 POC with 160 up front, so a light arrow isn't a problem. I just cant think of a tasteful way to add anything to the string. I like the look now.

Cant lie man. When I first cut it out and grabbed that grip I said, "Oh no, its not staying this way". But then my desire for a non-glass Hill bow took over and I carried on. Now that I've adjusted and learned how to grip it, I love it! You'll have to fire some arrows and see what you think.
-
Nice Hill style bow, Pearlie. Can you shoot it like Howard did? ;)
Nope! Not even close Pat. But I was hitting 3/4" square tags at 17 yards the other day every 3-4 shots. This bugger is pretty accurate when I do my job.
-
She turned out pretty, Chris. Those are some mighty steep fades!
-
Thanks Kenny! The fades are actually 4" long, that's just the handle shape your seeing.
-
nice bend chris, sometimes its nice not having to fight the twist out of a bow ain't it ;) just shape scrape and shoot, I like it, bub
-
Woo, that's some fancy decking
Great looking bow, I bet she spits 'em out fast, lovely tiller nice slim limbs.
Del

Good looking bow Chris. I may have to try some glue up stuff.

No question bub. Board type bows of any variety are much easier to wrestle into a bow. I don't think I have 4-5 hours into this bow. Doesn't mean they don't make a fine bow all the same, I love this one. I tillered the ipe blank on the floor before I glued it up. Made the blank come off the form perfectly matched and almost tillered off the saw.
-
Del I should have mentioned the limbs are a parallel 1" for 6" beyond the 4" fade. Then a straight taper to the tips. Its my most slender bow so far. Quite stout for a narrow, long bow to.
-
Pearly
That is one of your finest bows yet !
keep shooting it and it will teach you how to be a good shot
by the way it looks much nicer than most of Howards works and thats from one of his fans, I will take Howard over Fred any day , but then I aint from Michigan
Good job!!
-
Brother... That is a fine weapon right there!... Bows like this tell me I need to step up my game.... Brian
-
WoW Pearlie, that a fine looking bow!
BTW, I must thank you for the your tip about tillering an ipe bow.
I made a shallow D belly and it worked great!

Fine piece of work Chris.
-
Beautiful bow and beautifully tillered, Pearl Drums. I'm partial to laminated board bows and this one is beyond terrific.
AKA "takefive" on TG.
-
Now thats a beauty PD! If I didnt hate messing with glue-ups so much I would have to put a Hill style on my to-do list. ;)
-
Very nice bow I would imagine that it shoots quite well.
-
Man Chris. I dig that one
-
man what's he gonna do if this win's BOM, that would be two west coasters and a board :o >:D, just have some fun with ya buddy that's a sweet bow ;)

Dang, your making me blush you ol' nut!
-
Thanks again all! I cant tell you how much it means hearing it from you all.
-
Chris; You have to love Ipe. I still can't get over how little wood you have to use to make a hard, fast shooting bow when using Ipe. Well done, Sir!
-
Nice! Howie the boards has a nicely slim look to it. Ipe is good looking wood. You never see it around here, not in bows nor in decks...
-
Darn now I want one ::) nice work PD as usual.
-
I gotta be honest, when I clicked on this post, I wasn't sure what I was going to see. But all I can say is WOW ! You knocked it out of the Park with this one Bud - stunning. Tiller is spot on and Your design flawless. By far the coolest Board Bow I've ever seen ! Bob
-
Cool bow! Love that brick of a handle :) for some reason I was expecting a red oak "board" bow. Super nice glue up!
-
Red oak? You should know better singer/songwriter! That stuff is for furniture, trim and picture frames.
-
sweet, very very cool
chuck
-
Very fine bow Pearlie! Looks like a super smooth shooter with the tillering job ;)
Tracy
-
That does look like a smooth shooter, reminds me of what I always call English style. Not sure if that is the right term. You are a good example of versatility in bowyering.
-
Steve wouldn't the English style have a more round tiller with no distinct handle? Like a lot of what Del builds. Ill admit, I didn't do any research, just built what I seen in my minds eye.
-
Wow, you da MAN !!! That tiller looks amazing..
Bet its a sweetheart to shoot..
-
Pearl, I just rememeber looking at these old photos from the 20's and they had these long skinny stiff handle bows. Not sure where I picked up that they were english tyle ( not english longbows) but I think I read it somewhere once.
-
Maybe Ill call it an American styled English style long bow? :)
-
Pearl, I have a bad habit of attaching names to things that don't really fit, best to ignore mine.
-
Me too Steve. I just make bows and be sure they bend evenly. Its eaiser that way.
-
Well call it what ya will, it's nice.
-

This begs the question. Are we (by this I mean the whole archery community at large, even beyond this forum) ever going to create a document where we list out all the different styles along with their defining descriptions? As it is, from one point of view, everything we make is called a "longbow" whether it IS a longbow or if it is one of half eye's pocket bows.
A new thread on this subject might be in order, rather than hijacking What's-His-Name's scrapwood board bow. >:D (Plus another thread for my indigestion caused by a bad case of sour grapes.)
-
Nice looking bow. Good example of a Hill bow.
-
Nice looking bow. Great craftsmanship.
-
Pearlie, I just ran across a set of osage lams(2 tapered, 2 parallel) that someone gave me a few years ago and a hickory backing strip. I guess I gotta make a Hill style bow now. ::)
Howard probably started with ELB style hunting bow like Pope and Young used then went to this style later. Lam bows are easier to build, use less materials and are relatively easy to figure weight before you start once you build a few. Plus the use of different materials changes performance too, for instance, making a heavy draw weight bow that is physically lighter, I, boo for core or the whole stack.
-
Walnut makes a nice core to Pat. Hickory/walnut/yew would be a mean one.
-
Great bow. The color combinations are very appealing.
-
Completely different animal, but I have a walnut cored longbow w/glass back and belly that shoots very well...
-
Man, it looks sweet, old school classy!
-
Sweet bow Chris, I will have to shoot it in ElmHall. Beautiful work. :)
Pappy
-
hey chris can i get one of those for my bday??? lol
-
I love the bend on that one. Great job man.
-
Sweet bow Chris. Has a real nice look to it from the tips to the contrasting hickory backing. As always, well done.
-Dan
-
That's our lion killer at Elm Hall buddy! It'll be fun chucking arrows out there 45-50 yards at a Lion with Hill rip off bow.
-
That is a sweet Hill bow!
-
You do know Hill bows have string follow built in don't you. ;) ;D ;D ;D ;D see ya in a month. ;)
Pappy
-
That turns my stomach just thinking about it pappy!
-
I ain't too keen on the string follow thing either.
However, I do have one made by a fellow from Michigan that's 59@28 and shoots a 575 grain arrow at a consistent 185 fps...
Surprised me.. Reckon what it would have done if would have had reflex instead !
-
There yah go Chris! My kinda bow! Sweet, clean, nice lines, great tiller. Welcome to the dark side!!
I bet it shoots like a demon, too.
-
Super sweet looking bow......you have given me some inspiration......I have a good bit of ipe put up.......patiently waiting. Plus the one I have to work on now.
-
Cool! Real nice.
-
Pearl, did you rip that 3/4" thickness to something thinner before beginning the floor tiller?
-
No, I rasped in about an 1/8" taper to start with. Then floor tillered it prior to gluing the back on. It keeps the reflex even and not all at the fades.
-
Chris, you're consistent. Another beautiful bow. Long narrow bows are very appealing to me and are my favorite style. Almost bought a Hill bow once. But now I see that one can be built without using glass. Another lesson learned.

Well thank you George. It really was quite a simple build that anybody can replicate with no special jigs or tools, just glue and boards. I hadn't messed with dimensional bows in so long. It was like playing pool on one of those monster tables, then switching to those short tables! It was very nice having straight lines and specific dimensions to follow. Kind of relaxing.

I know what ya mean Chris, its kinda nice every now and then to biuld one by the numbers, lol.. Your comparison with pool is right on.. When i was a teenager part of my spendin $$ was made on the pool table..we would go early and warm up on the snooker table then switch to the 7 "ers when the money showed up. It was like shootin into 5 gallon buckets after the snooker table, lol >:D 8)... Brian
-
That thing is classily good looking. Awesome bow! It makes me want to buy some ipe. Perfect tiller.
-
Very nice. Me to, then if got hooked on the idea of the konrad bows.

George
The Hill style bow is based entirely on the no glass era.
-
Great job on the handle! I can't even see the seem! Does your brother in law's deck look as good as the bow?
-
I'd love to shoot that sucker! Nice looking bow!
-
One of the nicest bows I've seen on here. Worth a bump!
-
Ahhhh so this is what chris was building before he picked up some erc and forgot how to make a bow.... man, I sure you you recover from that!
Ribbing you, I love this. You nailed that bow, I have held a few hill bows and would never know it wasnt one, except yours is glassless and therefore more pure than any real hill bow.
-
Nice bow Chris. I made one HH style with bamboo and lemonwood and I liked how it shot.
-
Nicely done pearl . I like it. Ipa is good fast wood you just have to be carefull on the tiller . When It compresses sometimes it will wrinkle. I like it . Arvin
-
Thanks Arvin. I rebuilt that grip a few weeks ago. I couldn't stand shooting. Its much better for me now, shoots more comfortable in my hand.
-
Very nice!!
-
Very nice bow Pearly! I would love to have me a hill style bow one day. Patrick
