My friend Wayne gave me this....ummm.....stave last Wednesday. As you can see, she poses a challenge or two. I was just sitting around the truckstop this weekend and decided to see what the old girl had to offer. Here's the stave. Josh
-
Is that a stave, or a zombie raised from a dead stave?
-
Without studying the stave as I should have, I went straight to chasing a ring. I found a little surprise a couple rings down. Had I looked the stave over, it would not have been such a surprise.
-
I went to rippin' with the draw knife and got below that mess and all the borer holes and eyeballed in my front profile. There's a dark spot a few inches from the end I'm holding that was the bottom of a borer hole. I hope its sound there. With all the rotten stuff on the belly, I'm running out of wood. Here's the roughed in back, belly and sides. You can see that I have some heat gun work to do as it has about 40 degrees of prop twist. Notice the remnants of the rotten material on the belly pic.

I've heard of challenges before but dang Josh, you just a glutton for punishment >:D I gaurantee if there's a bow in there you damned-sure will find it. You can make a bow out of anything.

Now after removing all the trash, I'm left with a smidgen over 3/4" width at the handle. Normally that would be enough on Osage this old. However, the old girl had to throw me another curve ball. Right in the worst possible spot, dead center end to end, checks that run right to the side. I superglued em all and should remove most of it. There will be some remaining though. Any bets on whether or not this will make 50#@28"? Its 62" long BTW. Josh

Good question Jw.
I appreciate the vote of confidence Rich! I might need a little boost in that department to finish this one. Josh
-
Go for it Josh!..............I've got a piece just like it, that I need a little guidance/encouragement on................

Josh I think you can pull it off.
-
Josh, I'm in your corner impatiently waiting...

That doesn't look like any big challenge. >:D >:D >:D
You should hook up with Howard, H. Rhodes, the two of you could take notes on who could pick the most unlikely osage stave to get a bow from. He'll know what I'm talking about.
Still I'm not betting against you on making that one work Josh. :)

You have more energy than I my friend!
-
This looks like it's going to be a good one. :)
-
That ought to make a good one! Isn't it fun to find a bow hiding in there somewhere? >:D It is surprising to me how narrow a hunting weight bow can be in some crisp old seasoned osage like that. I am glued to my seat on this one. Good luck with it.
-
Josh, I saw what that stave looked like when Wayne gave it to you last Wednesday. I don't know that I would have been up to that challenge like you. Good luck with it. I'm sure you will be able to find a bow in there.
-
Get a string on it already and let's see what she'll do! Definitely a challenging piece of wood, at least from my perspective. I woulda roasted hot dogs over that one. :D
-
Who'd a thunk it could make a bow? I'm watching with interest.
-
Don't ever underestimate the power of the osage...I've made quite a few from some pretty nasty stuff as ya know...
And If we get to meet up in a few weeks I got something "good" for you this weekend, and better than that >:D
-
I feel pretty sure you can pull off something out of that, don't really know what makes a man even want to try ,but sometimes we just do. ??? Good luck and keep us posted on the progress. :) That was one nasty looking stick but looking better all the time, amazing what a little tender loving care can do for one. :)

yeah, i think it will work!
-
You got that thing flinging arrows yet?
-
You are an inspiration sir! Looking at a bow rise out of a Piece O' Crap stick like that makes me feel very spoiled to work with the good stuff, ...but I still do. Being spoiled is nice sometimes...

Thanks fellas! It'll be a couple weeks before I get back to it. I need to do a little heat bending and I won't be home to do that until the independence weekend. Not only that, but I had to get back to studying for the KMCA Truck driving championship that I'll be competing in next weekend. From what I understand, the written exam is a killer. I know how to drive a truck, but all the various legislation since the 30's that pertain to the transportation industry and international hazardous material handling law is not something that I'm well versed in. Just reading up on it is best described as tedium ad nauseam. Anyway, back to the subject, I should get a little more done on the bow in a couple weeks.
Chris, you have my curiousity peeked!
Thanks again fellas! Josh

Well....its terminal. I made it by one of our shops and borrowed the heatgun. Right when she came in line, she popped. Two cracks down the back and two laminar separations on the side. On a positive note, I know a fella in St. Louis who has been trying to get me to make him a display bow to hang on the wall. I've been turning him down for years because I make bows to shoot and I wasn't going to waste a good piece of wood for a wall hanger. Well this is not a good piece of wood. If I can get it to hold together long enough to get it looking good at brace, I'll finish it up for display only and surprise him with it. Thanks for the encouragement despite the outcome. It is much appreciated! Josh

Bummer Josh. Good for you for trying anyway
-
When you have a load of experience and take on a really questionable stave, it is akin to slaying a dragon. Honorable, even in failure.
When you have no knowledge of what it is that you are doing or why you are doing it, taking on a wonky stave is like trying to slay a squirrel while armed with an length of overcooked linguine. You Win or lose, you just look silly doing it.

Your getting no sympathy from me...you've been around this stuff long enough to shake it off,n I know you couldn't care less that it didn't work out :P ;) man I guess osage ain't all that its cracked up to be :-X
-
That's looking good man.
-
You gave it a shot Doc just looks like that piece didn't want to become a bow. Pretty cool when they work out but as you know sometimes there is no telling if a stave will give up a bow until you tear into it. I spent multiple hours on many old osage fence post chiseling away to only find out there was no bow to be had. The ones that did hold a bow though...., well that was my reward. :)
-
:( Well, you gave it a good try.
-
Doc, like yer style....Ya started with worst than nothing, and got it lookin good, then the little darlin decided to lay down and quit. Instead of moanin about it, I'll bet ya took a good look and give some thought to going ahead anyway. Ya got class man 8) 8) 8)
PS: ya know that anybody in their right mind wouldn't even had started, and yet you even got a plan at this stage. Admire your stick-to-it 8)
