Title: Spirit Station
Post by: bowtarist on May 04, 2014, 11:22:18 pm
I had a blast as usual at the Classic this year. Caught up a bit with ol Buddies and met a few more new ones. One of my favorite parts is the Spirit Station. Here are a few pics.

Cheers to all I met and my deepest consolences for those who could have made it and "decided" not to put in the effort.

It was a DAMN GOODER!!  ;) dpgratz

OH and PD...those dots on the lower right are for you all. OH, too the right on the pic w/ Josh is in memory of you. I'll try to post a better pic later.

Thanks Pappy...And all the Twin Oaks Gang!!!

Very spiritual place, I was told that you could take an item there and leave it, but nothing can be taken away. Early Sunday morning I took the last point I made in the pit and left it on a small shelf in honor of the Classic. Didn't get to the Oooga Booga intro, but maybe next year!

I've never been to the Spirit Station!  :o  I don't know why. Maybe I'm not spiritual enough.  :-\  From the pics of it, it looks like a very cool, spiritual place.

Wildman, I didn't know where it was at either and I've did a fair bit of walking around Pappy's property. I finally saw it when I had to step around the back of Brother Dan's campsite to a,a, see a man about a horse. :D

Yeah, special place within a special place.  I wanted to go there last year, but didn't get the invite.

This year I had the honor of helping start the fire.  I have been a part of several fire starting ceremonies, but this one meant a lot more to me.  I used my flint and steel kit to strike the spark into the char cloth.  Blackhawk was beside me with a handful of fine tinder waiting to hand me.  Suddenly it all became very clear that I was not to do this alone.  One man strikes the spark, but another fans the flames.  I handed him the char and within moments we had a nice little fire burning.

The symbolism of "passing it along" struck me deeply.  The Tennessee Classic is an amazing exhibition of this concept, the spirit station is a distillation of that concept, and being able to spark the fire that was used by the people renewing the art on the wall was an honor I will not forget.  Thank you to all that participated and for inviting me to be involved.

Oh, and in the photo with Jade and whats-his-name, you can see my little archer guy in the upper right corner.  I stole that figure from the work in Lascaux Cave or one of the other caves in France.  Five straight lines, one curved line, and one circle....and it tells a story.

Took miss Joanie up yesterday, she was amazed and looked over all the bowls and brushes yall made to do it with, loved it, she especially liked the brush made from a small limb and the cocanut bowl.It was quite up there so we just sat and looked for a while. She found a can on the trail on the way out and got very unhappy, she  said don't people know you don't throw trash down and especially in a special place like this. I had to agree and told her it was probably a kid that just didn't understand yet, but If they hang around this bunch they will. :) Thanks again.

This has been a very cool experience to be involved in and like the symbolism that jw has discovered in the process beginning the painting. Eric's son was our  "hunter" that placed the dart in the horse that brought the painting to an end symbolizes the importance of the youngest within our group.
Our paints this year were made from baked clay, yellow mud like stone, iron oxide made by Derick, charcoal and white made from cooking clam shells. Stones were hammered on the surface to clean it to a lighter color. Brushes were made from branches and roots from trees in the area.  These branches were pounded on the end to create individual fibers. Most of these paints, less the charcoal had shell water poured from the top of the white paint. The idea is to see if the red paint will bind to the wall like the white did last year. We all have learned a lot from the process and I hope we are allowed to continue this new tradition in this special place. Thank you Pappy and miss Joanie for the honor.

In South Africa the Bushmen (very small stature) lived off the eland which is the largest of the antelope.  The tan looking color on the animal in the spirit station is the same as the Bushmen used.  The first painter would paint a large eland and the next painter would paint a smaller one in behind the first and the paintings would become smaller and smaller with several eland pictures fading away in the back ground.  Their image of themselves was very tall stick figures with very exaggerated egos!  They sometimes had bows and sometimes had spears.  The Spirit Station has become a great part of the farm and the people responsible are to be commended on their efforts.  Joe

There are a ton of things that I missed about going to the classic, but none were so keenly felt as missing this tradition.  It looks great!  Well done!  Josh

I finally made it over to the spirit station for the first time Sunday morning. Outback Bob and myself walked over looking at wild flowers. Joe York was there blessing the buffalo skull and we joined in. What a cool place. You can feel te medicine just going there. I did leave my mark, a crooked arrow drawn with charcoal from the fire pit.

It's very cool to see the reverence and respect.
The art and the ancient application is commendable.
Thanks for all the post and great photos.

Iowabow, how did the pigment hold up with the burnt shell added?  Did it give the results you had hoped for?

This is the part of the whole 9 ring circus that we call the Classic that I missed the most this year!

@ blackhawk...sorry we did not find you. Old hippy went looking for painters while Derick, Tim and I worked to start the fire. Know that you were missed and hope you will join us next year on the Saturday afternoon.
@ Your name was mentioned many times while we were painting so you were there. I hope we can can have a good year and  be able next year to join together again
@ JW the paints held well enough to see an image to reference for repeating the scene.
@ Pat B and Joe I wish I could have seen his ceremony and I am glad you added a part to the wall.

I am very honored to be able to be a part of this tradition. And by Joe asking me to work with the buffalo design.
