Here's another yew longbow made from some yew that Carson, Wylden and I cut a couple years ago. It is 67" long, nock to nock, 58" @ 27". It's a nice piece of tight grained yew with some interesting features. It was full of sapsucker holes that scarred the sapwood. I decided to scrape down past them but they left streaky brown stains in the sapwood underneath. Kind of a natural camo effect. It's finished with 8 coats of tru-oil buffed down with pumice powder and oil. The handwrap is leather done in John Strunk's style. The tip overlays are buffalo horn and the string is fast flight. Here's a bunch of photos. Thanks for looking 8).

ahhhh man.that is a great bow...i wish i could do work like that....you have done some sweet bows BUT i love the tiller and profile of that...thanks so much for sharing...john
-
Wow man. That thing is first class all the way. I don't even know what else to say about it. I love it great tiller. Your leather work is nuts.
-
Very nice, the style fits that wood perfectly.
-
That's another fine looking bow Weylin. I always look forward to your posts. Great work.
-
Thanks, John! I'm glad you like it. I don't know what you're talking about though, you make some real nice bows. By the way, I'm working on a new take down with a couple of those yew billets you hooked me up with last year. I should have it done in time for the Stick and Sage. Are you going to be there this year?
Thanks for the compliments, Matt. I admire your bows as well. Congrats on your BOM win.
Thanks, Steve!
Thank you, H Rhodes. Glad you enjoy my work.
-
very cool bow weylin, very cool
-
Oh my......wow that is beautiful, every part of it!
-
That tiller at full draw...wow!
-
Two Thumbs up - well done ! Bob
-
That's what I like :)
You can tell the recurve target archers that the little stump is the longrod attachment ;D
Del
-
Beautiful. Well done.
-
You worked that yew beautifully Weylin, that is one classy looking bow and it has a smooooth bend as well. Nice!
-
That's a beauty! Very nice work Sir.
-
Nice clean bow Weylin. Just my style man!
-
Sweet...nuttin wrong with a yew alb...it'll always be a timeless classic!!! :)
-
That's a sweet one man, great work.
-
Lovely stuff 8)
-
AWESOME bow bro! I really like it. nice and smooth. Really like the natural look. The handle wrap is really cool too. great job all the way around.
Just one small thing. Don't you think the draw weight is a little low? >:D
I thought we were all make'n 100# bows now. ??? :o  ;D
-
Nice one Weylin. That bend looks perfect. Has sweet shooter written all over-it.
-
Beautiful work. I am really itching to make some longbows when my schedule clears up soon!!!
-
top shelf man, looks great.
-
Nice one buddy!
-
Thank you all for the kind words and encouragement! It means a lot. :D
Del, I had another friend tell me that knob reminded him of something else... ::)
Blackhawk, I keep coming back to this style. They sure shoot hard and sweet and I really like the look of them as well.
Arrowind, I'll leave the #100 bows to the pros. I'll stick to reasonable bows.
No time like the present, TimBo!
-
You nailed that one man. Good job.
-
Gorgeous! Hope to see it at the Stick n Sage, if not sooner.
-
Love it
-
Awesome bow Welin, I love everything about it! Is yew envy wrong? Because I've got a bad case of it right now!
-
Sweet clean crisp bow!
I like those simple understated nocks better than those "chesspieces" they stick on classic elbs
-
Very nice bow....
-
Absolutely lovely mate. You channelled the spirit of Olde England on that one! :)
-
Very nice!
-
It is indeed a very nice bow. The only thing I would suggest is you cut your nocks at a steeper angle to follow the angle of the string. You can see in both pics of the nocks where the string has left some color on the wood where it jumps the groove as you draw. It's a minor detail but it will look better and also easier on the string
-
Nice one bro! Love the tiller on that money shot! Can't wait to see it.
-
yes,i will be there...cant wait to see what you have done with the billets....
-
I love these bows. I know firsthand cuz I was lucky enough to get one of your yew bows in a trade. One of the best bows I have shot. Still shooting strong by the way.
-
That grip... I'll second the props to your leather work.
-
Beautiful in all aspects! great tiller!
Can you tell me why you decided to use the stick upside down?
-
Thank you, everyone!
Dave and Dan, you'll see it at stick and sage, for sure.
Thanks for the advice, Marc. Do you make the angle match the string at brace or at full draw? Lately on my bows like this with tip over lays I've been having the top of the overlay doing the work to hold the string in place and only having the barest hint of grooves on the side so as to avoid the problem that you mentioned.
Simon, that's a good question and one that I didn't put a ton of though into. I think the main reason was that I wanted the big knot on the bottom limb for some reason on this bow. Is there a reason that I should reconsider that on future bows?

Match at brace but you do need to allow for the string at full draw as well

Here's what I do:
Whenever possible I use the stave inthe direction it has grown. If there are some imperfections in one limb, for example a great knot, this will be the upper limb. The upper limb is longer (on asym. bows) and the stress coan contribute on a longer way.
In your case I would have used the stick exactly in the other direction.
But that's just me.
And again you have made an exceptional fine bow!
-
That's as nice a yew longbow as I have seen. Wonderful work Weylin.
-
Very nice, I like bows with nipples ;) Outstanding leather work.
-
Another beauty, your work is top shelf!
-
Thanks, Gordon!
Thank you, Markus. This knot reminded me of something else though. I have another bow that has a straight up nipple on it. I had a friend tell me I should paint this one to look like a dogs behind... :-\ I learned my leather work from the best, but I still have plenty of room to improve. It's hard to get away from the Strunk style though.
Thanks for the compliment, Bushboy. :)

Another great looking bow! Well done
