Title: old yew bow
Post by: Zion on April 26, 2014, 05:07:53 pm
hey guys got this bow at an antique store, the guy wants my bro to sell it online. It's Yew, seems really light poundage, and looks like the current knocks were put on after the original self knocks. Just wondering if anyone knows anything about bows like this or if it's valuable. Oh and it is backed with something, seems like cloth. It's 70" long. Any info on it would be great, thanks.

Having a good look at it the best I can pic quality taken into account, I would have to say it was built by an amatuer.  Any markings on it..? If it shoots well and is high poundage, keep it.!

I'd hang it on the wall and try to imagine its history. Probably its only value is historical and that would be for only a few folks...but the stories it could tell.  ;)

What makes you think it's yew? Can you see the sapwood/heartwood? Hard to tell from the pics. I can't imagine selling it in good faith, or it being worth much. Wall hanger IMO.

The third picture down you can see the sap/heartwood. It looks like yew from here.
The nocks have been put on pretty badly from what I can see, I wouldn't even string that again  ;)

Where do you see sapwood in the third pic?

There doesn't seem to be any sapwood, but the grain and color looks like yew to me. Idk tho, does lemonwood have tight rings like yew?

I have one with the same, identical horn nocks except they are black. I got it from stickbender and it was broken. His was yew, 30#, made in London, England and sold in a hardware store in Arkansas, at least that was the information on the canvas bow sock.

Here's a picture of an old lemonwood bow. Does it look similar?
