Title: Timberdoodles
Post by: wildman on April 18, 2014, 12:04:27 am
I have watched this pretty lady go from sitting on eggs to today having chicks. Common Woodcock (Scolopx Minor did that for JW) ;D or as Aldo Leopold would say Timberdoodle. I will try to post pics as they grow if they don't become a critter snack.

Whoah!  That's awesome!  Those babies are so cool looking!  I wonder if they could be domesticated...

Very cool Keith! I love watching the sky dance every spring. My son and I would stalk to the landing spot and see how close we can get to the male and listen to him "peent"

I have never lived where these birds are, so I have never seen one.  They are fascinating in the extreme, and those that hunt them are usually fanatical about them and conserving their habitat.

Absolutely gorgeous birds, fantastic cryptic patterning to the feathers!  Thanks for sharing!

I love hunting these with my German Shorthair. When he goes on point my goal is to see them on the ground before they fly. They hold very tight. They are really neat birds.

Well, that was short lived, but alas life is not a Disney movie. Fresh coon tracks in the watershed below nest sight this morning, and the family was gone. Racoons have to eat too. They will need the energy come fall when I turn the Cur dogs on them >:D

That is fascinating! I've never lived near them either. Looked 'em up on Cornell Lab of Ornithology. According to Cornell, they leave the nest as soon as they're dry.Guess they kinda hit the ground running like Killdeer? Fingers crossed they were gone before that ol' coon got there.

Great photos! They definitely blend in to their surroundings. We don't have these in my area. Curtis

Neat.  I've never seen their young but have seen a  nest before.  They have a very unique aerial show at dusk

Thanks for the photos. It is awesome to watch those birds flying into a wet area just at gray light. Just a shadow twisting and dodging through the trees.

Raccoons are terrible on birds. I once read where they attempted to get turkeys started in a new area and it failed several times. They ended up trapping and hunting most of the raccoon in the area and the turkeys started surviving. They eat the eggs and can climb trees killing poults on the limbs.

Hope those timber doodles survive, but raccoon tracks near by is bad news.
