I'm looking to make a short sinew backed hickory bow for tree stand hunting. I'm thinking 60" maximum and 45#@28. Any advice on design layout? Thanks for the help!

60" t/t, 4" handle centered in the bow, 4" flares to 1 1/2", out a few inches and a straight taper to 3/8" tips. This is similar to the Massey Medicine Bow I built years ago. If you live where the humidity gets high, sinew backed hickory can be a problem. My medicine bow can change from 45#@26" to over 65# depending on the humidity. I built it 56#@26". :o

Can you elaborate on that a little? How wide at the handle? What do you mean by 4" flares to 1-1/2"?
Thanks!

The handle is 1 1/4" wide bulbous and from the handle to the widest part of the limb is 4", similar to the older ALB of the 40s and 50s. From that wide part go out 6" to8" before tapering to 3/8" tips.

Thank you !!!

60 is short for a stiff handled bow but it can be done at that weight. My hunting bow is 60'' stiff handle at 60#, but it's screamin when at full draw. for handles I go 1.5'' fades and 4'' handle, 1 and 1/4 in middle and 1 and 1/8 at ends. all personal preference. at 60'' the important hting is that the still handle doesn't extend too far so you have enough working limb. Again handles are largely personal preference. shelf, no shelf, big little, etc. hold it often and adjust until it feels good!

You can easily make a unbacked bow with those stats and without having to go thru all the sinewing etc....me personally I'd do it unbacked(got one in the works actually),and especially if I lived basically anywhere east of the Mississippi river...but to each his own....
