Title: first timer, bows #3 and #4
Post by: wizardgoat on March 25, 2014, 02:54:50 am
Hey guys, I've been lurking here for a while, thought it was time i shared a couple bows.
This site has been a source of amazing help and inspiration for me, I can only hope to one day
make a bow half as good as some of you.
I've been obsessively  making bows since december, this is #3 and #4 and I'm pretty happy
with how they turned out.
sorry about the photos, we havent yet figured out the best angles and all that.

#3 is rawhide backed yew. It had crazy prop twist, that i heat gunned out mostly.  it had a heavy D flex in it,
so i went with it and tried to flip the tips to make a bow that
looked like it would be in lord of the rings or game of thrones haha.
Its a bendy handle flat bow 62" ntn and pulling 56# @26"

#4 This one was a big challenge for me, but was sure alot of fun.
Vine maple, 62" ntn, and pulling 54# at 26.
99% happy with my tiller, but there was a couple knee joint that were quite tough to tiller around.

Looks like you caught the bow building bug for sure WG.  ;)
Real nice work on those bows, wouldn't think they were only your 3rd & 4th bows from looking at them. They not only look well made but they also have a cool primitive style to them as well. Looking forward to seeing #5.

The quality of the work and the tiller on both of them speak for themselves. That day where you make a bow at least half as good as some of the bowyers here, already there man. I don't think anyone would have known those were your 3rd and 4th bows if you hadn't mentioned it, but it makes them all the more impressive. You've got an eye for tiller, and a hand that shows talent. Good job on both of them.

Thanks everyone for your kind words! We shoot in the north shore mountains in vancouver BC. Its full of vine maple and chanterelle mushrooms in the fall.
I'm really starting to love vine maple, it grows like a weed up here, its mostly all very snaky, I can easily cut it with a hacksaw, and can work it within a month.
im hoping all the would-be bowyers who lurk on here,  too intimidated to take the plunge, will see my newbie work and realize that it doesnt take years of breaking bows to make some shooters.
My wife just made her second, both are great shooters, I'll post some pics if she lets me!

They both look great man!  Nice shots in the woods also.  Love the snakey one on the mossy log.  Your artistic eye is reflected in both your photos and bow.  Can't wait to see # 5!

Very nice work wizardgoat!  Welcome to the addiction.  I bet we will be seeing lots more work from you, at least I hope so.  That snakey VM is quite the achievement.

Nice bows! That yew cut close to sea level?

Yew was from northern vancouver Island.  The rings are thicker than other yew I have, but Im not making warbows so Im pretty sure it doesnt matter so much. They rings look thicker on the tips because of the angle I came in on the belly.

And also, I recently cut some tight ringed yew near sea level, and thick ringed yew on a mountain.
I'm still really new to this, but it seems like sun exposure plays a bigger role in ring thickness
than elevation. Maybe theres other factors I dont know...
in a years time ill have plenty to experiment with though!
