I have a guy that contacted me recently from ages ago asking me if I still was looking for osage, that I don't even remember contacting. So of course I said "as a matter of fact I am", :). He said he has 100 logs on the ground of osage, and wants to give me some as long as I make him a bow out of some of it. He lives upstate of me and it will be maybe 270 or so miles round trip. The only working vehicle I got right now is a plymouth grand voyager that leaks oil (slowly), either burns or leaks coolant and has random bouts of over heating (hasn't since last summer, still not too keen on what was going on there). Other than that it is a trooper and has made similar trips. I am just debating this though, I haven't seen it yet, so I don't know how it looks. It's been on the ground for two weeks, so I don't know about checking, bugs, etc. I would love some good osage though as I haven't had a chance to go cut none for a while. He says the biggest is 8" diameter, so I think he might have a bunch of smaller diameter bush sized osage for the majority, as he was wanting to give me some "branches", etc.

Can he send pictures(?), if not describe what you look for in a good log and see if what he has matches up. Do you have a pard with a more reliable vehicle? Sounds like a good chance to reconnect and make it more than picking up some logs. ROAD TRIP,HAH! Sounds like it could be made into a good time! Good Luck! One of the greatest things in my life with archery and now flintlocks is the people I have met.

I wouldn't drive that far for 8" logs. They could all be crooked or full of limbs. I would ask for pictures.

-
id ask for some pictures too. and you can rent a uhaul pickup starting at $20.

And one more hour to my farm ;)

Made trips blind across the great state of Texas that didn't yield much of anything. Call me and tell me you have Osage I can cut and I'll do it again.
-
If I could drive 300 miles round trip to fill my truck with osage, I'd leave 5 mins ago. Are you kidding? Ride your bike!
-
I drove 1900 miles for some yew last year, but i haven't driven very far Osage. I would definitely get a better idea of what your gonna be getting before heading out. Josh

I would do it in a heartbeat. We don't have much Osage up here.

30 miles from my house I have all I could ever want. I just have to spend the day helping out around the farm splitting wood or welding things. Not a bad deal if you ask me

Where about is this osage at??? I drive 1,000 miles a week or more sometimes for work. 270 miles round trip would be nothin for me. ;), and well worth it for some osage. I'm on my way ;D ;D

Grrrrr!
You need to move south just a little bit ;D

That stuff is infesting the Brazos valley here in texas. People are always looking to get rid of it. Everyone considers it a trash tree round here. You couldn't force me to move from this area ;D

Grrrrr!
Don't be bitter , Adam! I'm sure it's over rated ;) It's all splintery , gives you slivers and stains your shop floor if it mixes with the snow on your boots. And after all of your hard work it just turns this horrible deep , amber colour. I'm sure that's why most guys try to cover it up with snake skins and such. I really don't think we're missing much. ??? :-\ :'(

You forgot the golden boogers when you work with it.

That's why I tilt my head way back when I nap....so the sunshine will turn the golden boogers nice deep brown. Otherwise I gotta go to a head shop to wipe 'em on the day-glo posters.
-
You guys ain't got nothing on me... just be thankful you can drive to osage at all haha :P
Keep an eye out in a few weeks for pics of (I hope) my osage seedlings :)

Haaa ha ha!! Aint that the truth! I think Missile Master has the best remedy for that.

lol Adb, I'll trade you places, you can have our osage, and I will take some of your canadian yew, :). I actually have some I can cut closer to me too, it all grows behind some factory near me. I just haven't had a chance to cut none. I don't officially have permission to cut it, but I have been for years, and nobody cares. Recently a bunch of hobos moved in and set up a big camp back there though. :o Hopefully they all got froze out this winter, >:D. I am still not sure if I will go up there, I would love some osage but the guy doesn't seem like he would be willing to take any photos for me. I have had a stressful relationship with my van over the years...

Last year in May I drove 1,200 miles, 18 hours one way to get to the Classic in Tennessee and came home with some primo 'sage!
(another thank you to all the people that made that possible for me!)
-
I am driving about 150 miles (1 way) next month to cut some osage. Not sure I would make the trip if I had to take what was already cut though. I just as soon pick out the trees! ;D
-
Since there is none here, I would drive 270 miles just on the off chance there would be a few staves in the pile. I wouldn't take your car though :D
