Title: How To Remove Bow Backing

On this bow I must have had an uneven clamps set in one spot and it was driving me crazy having a messed up glue line so I removed the backing.
I remember someone asking how to remove the backing. Well here yah go.
Pretty straight forward.
 I used titebond on this glue up, and I'm assuming this method would work with other epoxies as well.


Place the heat gun at the tip and pry apart with a chisel or wedge. Then work your way down the blank. If you spliced the handle it's a good idea to spent the least amount of time heating as possible.
Once finished, clean up the stock and apply a new piece of boo(or whatever).

Easy.

Does the glue let go easily or is there a danger of ripping chunks out of the belly if you get aggressive?

A few years ago  had a hickory backing crack. I had glued it with TBIII. I called tech support for TiteBond and the tech guy told me to heat it to 150 degrees and the glue would release. It worked great. I have also heard that you can get it hotter, let it cool and the TB glue will be more permanent.

I've done this with handle overlays, but it rendered them unusable.  Were you able to re-use the backing?

I wouldn't re-use it.

Actually if it was just in one spot you could have just heated the backing in that spot till hot and clamped the area down till the glue line was good and let it cool.  Would have saved you a lot of work

I tried that first Marc, it just didnt want to stay.
