Had a carpenter friend see one of my longbows the other day. He noticed how you could see the small pits in the early growth wood of the bow. He mentioned that i could put sanding sealer on it to make a more smooth finish. Anyone else ever used this on a longbow? And if so how does it work with staining the bow?

It works good just let your stain dry good first.

I use shellac and fine pumice. It fills wood pores nicely and can be top-coated with most anything.

This is the way to go.

I use sanding sealer on a daily basis at work . And you can put other finishes over it . And its about as easy as it gets for filling voids. And it sands much easier than all other finishes .

3 coats of Tru Oil will fill the pores nicely. 3 coats of spar urethane over that will also add some waterproofing. Jawge
