My friend Nic and I drove two hours north to this Osage grove he knows. We did all the cutting by hand and man am I beat. We got some really good staves though. Longest pieces are about 65"

There was a black berry bush wrapped all around this second tree that we had to clear out.

Nice haul, lots of fun right there... :'(

That looks like some good times right there. Nice haul. Make sure you seal the ends.
-
Yup tb2 is drying now. Any other tips on drying/seasoning? Should I split the wider ones one more time?
-
I can't really tell how big they are. If you split them to small they might start warping on you. Make sure to seal the backs if you remove the bark and sapwood. That looks like young bark. I bet the rings are pretty thick.
-
Yeah rings are real thick on a few of them.
-
Nice haul jordo, by

Bring home some osage is always a good feeling 8). Don't forget some of them small limbs. I've made some sweet bows from 2" limbs. Cutting osage is also more fun with a chainsaw :). You sure earned it doing it with a ax
-
Nice load of wood! Next time you go, cut you a couple of those overhanging limbs too. They already have some nice back set to them, but the ones I've made like that were a challenge to tiller.
-
way to go Bucky!!! now quit yer whining about not havin no yella wood!! >:D
-
Finally Jordo! Now I can stop feeling sorry for your butt. Since that's all you have? Id suggest peeling and sealing the whole batch. If you don't, almost half with develop laminar cracks and the ends will check deeper. Peel and seal now and your chances of using every stick of it are good. I ruined 25% of my stash by not peeling and sealing.
-
Chainsaw next time unless this was a covert haul ;D be careful splitting the small stuff too much before it's had a chance to dry, it'll corkscrew on you and make straightening difficult. Nice haul!
Tracy
-
Nice haul! Looks like I shoulda sent ya 2 drawknives, lol.. If you split them smaller ones right away put them back to back and flip them 180* from each other and wrap them together with some kinda rope. It seems to help me with the warping 😉... Brian
-
For covert operations a two man, sharp crosscut saw is the way to go. Quieter than chopping and chopping is quieter than a chainsaw. Sawing also gives good flat ends.
Looks like you left some 36 inch pieces that would make nice billets also. Take a yardstick with you to get your cuts.
-
I'm with Paul. Cut some of those smaller suckers. They can make very nice bows.

Yup. My rule with cutting osage is cut now ask questions later >:D. Those limbs can take serious crown and preform, or leave sapwood or decrown. Plus limb bows have a cool primitive look to them.
-
Pearl, koan is sending me a drawknife Tuesday so I'll be able to make a bench vice in the mean time.
We had to haul all of this 1/2 mile back to the car without any ropes or anything to help so we only the big stuff two at a time, before splitting. Next time I'm making some type of carrying device.

We both cut one each. It'll probably be the first piece I work with.
-
just a 1/2 mile, come on man your young >:D
-
At 50 bucks plus per stave it's well worth the walk.
-
You might consider cutting some long Straight limbs.
Make yourself a couple Travois to haul out the big stuff.
Then use the Travois poles for bow wood too...
Nice Primitive Haul...
If you wanna go more Primitive next time y'all could use Stone Axes... >:D

HA! I don't think ill be trying that any time soon.
-
I like to saw those poles in half, lengthwise and bind them back together with small spacers between the 2 halves so they get good air circulation. I prefer to add controlled reflex later instead of dealing with the reflex the staves will take when cut in half.
-
That's a great idea, thanks pat.
-
Y'all did good, but you left a butt load of Billets ;D
-
Agreed, Now that I look back at it. Our mentality go in was "it if ain't near perfect lets skip it". If I had a chainsaw I would've cut smaller stuff.
-
Man, my hats off to ya. Cutting osage with ax and hand saw is a task I don't think I really want to tackle very often. Hope you get some good ones out of that batch. Danny
-
Nice haul man. I like cutting staves with hand tools. Unless there is a lot of real big stuff. How do the rings look.
-
Most of it has some thick rings. I'll post some pics of the ends later.
-
Sounds great. I'm happy for ya. Can't wait to see some pics
-
Thanks Matt here's some pics.

-
You know your my favorite bowyer Chris :D
-
Good looking mulberry Jordo....
At first glance I second guessed it as well n may be mulberry....but I think it is osage...I zoomed in on the smaller branches attached to the tree they were cutting and I do see thorns...kinda hard to see tho,but I do believe I see em...and mulberry don't have thorns....there were thorns on the small branches and limbs right jordo?....
-
There was definitely thorns lol.

I think the roughness of the end cut and the very wide sapwood makes it hard to identify if that is the only pics you look at. That ratio looks good from what I can tell. Good score!!
-
Nice work man. Those look like they will work nicely
-
i got one piece that im anxious to peel and split, im hoping its as snakey as i looks.
