This summer I plan to make damascus arrowheads and other things like knives, ax heads, hatchets, strait razors and anything that people would be interested in. I do want to know if there would be an interest for these items in return for materials for bow building, specifically staves that I don't have access to. Staves I'm interested include: ERC, Osage, HHB, Hickory, Oak, Hard Maple, Elm, Black Locust, Good yew, Plumb, Crepe Mertle, Hackberry, and many others I'm sure. I realized that staves are expensive to ship but right now I'm just trying to get a sense of interest, Later when I'm ready to make the items then we can talk numbers and shipping. So, *raise of hands* how many are interested?
-
Are you going to forge your own or purchase stock? Good Damascus is expensive too!

Damascus hawk ?
Show us the pics when ready!

I plan to make my own but that will be in the summer. Ill make one of everything to show that I'm capable.
-
I be interested but probably won't have much to trade
-
thats fine, basically im trying to expand my bowmaking tools/materials especially the ones that i have a hard time getting. staves are just of particular interest because i dont have much time outside of summer to collect them
-
a damascus hawk would be pretty nice! need snake skins??
-
I definitely am interested. I have access to LOTS of Black locust, quite a bit of hickory, elm, honeylocust, and a ton of cedar that I'm not sure of the exact species. I would still have to cut it though I do have some hickory and black locust that is a few years old. When your ready to start making and if your interested in trading for any of them let me know.

I would happily take skins in trade, like I said, things that I have a hard time getting a hold of are really nice for me.
-
I would definitely be interested in some damascus arrowheads!!!!! Let me know when you get started and I'll let you know what I have available.

sounds like a plan...let me know when your ready...got a coupla months till snakin tiiiiime!!
-
also, I know that there are many types of damascus that i can make, i was wondering if any are opposed to cable damascus, cable would be easier to get a hold of, and as you can see in the pictures, it looks nice. (btw, that picture is not my work, just an example of calble damascus.)
-
Just so you all know, i was planning on making both types, its just much more time consuming and expensive to make the really high contrasting.
-
cable is cool ..like how it looks..will a hawk made of damascus cable hold up to..chopping?
-
ill have to look but as far as i know once it welds its just as strong? as regular steel. Dont take me at my word until i do my research but thats what i understood.
-
use good high-carbon or mixed-carbon steel cable
just checked it out on ehow. seems real doable and a good starting point into damascus making too.
-
Yep that was the plan, I figure that since the steel is good its just a matter of selecting tough steel rather than hard steel for the major portion of the axe since you want your axe to absorb the blow so it doesn't break. I have more research to do but i think that temper can also play a factor.
-
ok, so i talked to someone that knows a lot about the composition of steel and he said that damascus would actually be more ideal for making axes because it combines steels(if you are using two different steels.) and if you arent then you can use a medium carbon steel to make the axe head and it will be more tolerant to shock, or you can temper the blade so that the cutting edge is super hard but the rest of it is spring steel like or even mildly soft.
-
I'm interested and I can get you staves
-
getting more interested as this thread moves along. ;)
-
Yeah I know. I am definitly excited to be home this summer. and the idea of having time to blacksmith
-
The coolest knife I ever saw was cable steel with a 'Gater foreleg bone handle !
-
Even got me Intrested
-
well I'm glad people are interested, I never like doing something and then finding out nobody really is interested.
-
muffin I do things that I find interesting, if somebody else does too, well that's just a big plus

not quite what I meant, I do enjoy things for their own sake, hence I'm at the college I'm at...I am just interested in whose interested. I wouldn't want to make a post in the trading forum saying something that I get no replies or few to. Now more people know and have time to think about if they are interested ::) ::) ::)

Count me in, but I will have to find something you need, or like, or want, etc. I don't have much in the way of primitive material.
