Post by: Ink on February 08, 2014, 04:02:25 pm
So me and 4dog went and got some hickory today. Just getting lucky lately I guess. The largest log is 18" and the one I am currently trying to split. This craps as hard to split as elm

Don't be, it's winter cut and the bark is not wanting to come off. It's like a 1/2" of pure concrete

speaking of the bark, has anyone had any success with soaking the wood in water to make the bark come off easier

Nice haul!  I have removed  winter cut shag bark bark by using my draw knife to kind of pry it up.  I would get it started at one end under the bark and rotate the draw knife up.  The bark would separate a little bit from the stave.  I moved the draw knife down a few inches and do it again.  It left most of the cambium layer on the staves.  I'm not sure if that will work on your hickory.  Good luck with whatever you try.

i tried that technique first and the bark laughed at me  >:( . might just be this one tree, the other trees were smaller. This one has some massive bark and a 1/2" cambium layer.

You could try putting staves in the shower with hot steamy water for half hour and see how that works for you.   Sometimes does.  Russ

Nice hickory haul! I put a winter cut stave in a pond and left it for about a year amd the bark still wouldnt peel off. I cut bow wood in the spring when the bark peels and use the winter cut stuff for smoking.

well i would have prefered to have spring cut this hickory, but the friend i got the trees from was already knocking them over. He gave me first dibs at it, the next guy was coming to get firewood. So Im just gonna have to suffer thru it and take off the bark with a hatchet.
