Went Osage Hunting today and found a limb that was dead straight......was a challenge to get to it. But you gotta do what you gotta do to get that osage.
-
That's probably the safest spot to cut that limb from. Lets see some pictures of your haul.
-
i'll post some pics tomorrow when it gets light again, hate winter time. wasn't a huge haul, bought 8 or 9 logs. unfortunately a lot of them have small rings on the outer 1" of the log. Gonna be a lot of wood removal to get to the good rings.oh well that'll be another 2 years away anyways. I'll worry about it then. Pics in the morning.
-
before yall see pics let me just say that i saw what he "hauled" today,, and Jason will probably be sore in the morn. he got some BIG stuff,,course he had some help,,is that a trackhoe in the pic,,lol,, i guarantee he needed it to load a couple "pieces",,just glad we are friends
...ya know..just in case i need a stave or two....lol
-
Glad you got some good stuff. That picture cracks me up ;D
-
nothing wrong with some small rings. Some of my best bows are tight ringed
-
that looks a little like the tree I want to cut down next.
Except it has a curvy trunk.
-
the largest log i got was a 12"
-
Nicely done sir.
Good haul.
How long has it been dead?
-
Looks like a nice pile of bow wood. There should be some good staves in there.
-
Most of it was still alive. A couple of the trees were dead a year or two
-
That's a nice bunch od sage, Ink. Look at the color of that wood! 8)
-
yeah pat one of those trees dulled a chainsaw blade it was so hard. normally they shoot yellow dust out when your cutting, this one was spitting out Tang.
-
Osage like that is pretty brittle but makes a heck of a bow. If it is real thin rings you might consider rawhide backing.
-
Nice haul. The pic reminds me of an incident where I was up to my chest in winter creek water, using a bow saw to cut an Osage limb that was out over the creek. A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do to get good bow wood!!
-
PatB I'll probably do rawhide or sinew on most of it. Some of this stuff however has got some rings that are 1/32nd thick for about the first inch of wood. Probably gonna have to keep the draw weight low on most of the bows produced from those logs. Or scrap down past it. Gsulfridge i draw the line at freezing water. Some limbs can wait till spring :)

I cut my first osage when it was -5 F outside. Don't do it.
We were off school b/c it was so cold, and a friend and I were out wood-hunting. we found what we were looking for.
