Almost forgot I had this stuff. Some pottery found just outside the entrance to jobsite - they were cutting a haul road with maintainer, I found them in the burm on side of road. And a grind stone (don't know what their called) for grinding grain I suppose. Found a lot of Pottery shards associated with debitage and shells all over that desert (Chihuahuan desert). Also found a few points, can't locate em at the moment - I put em somewhere safe ;D. Thought ya'll might like to see em..
I did visit the museum there and found out that the indians that inhabited that area were Mescallero Apache - so I figure that's who made this stuff.

That's an impressive find. I've found a few small broken pieces of pottery over the years in the river bottoms. There is an indian mound near my house that you can see from the road. The local college dug in it years ago. I'm less then a mile from the Cumberland River where I live.

Nice find Cowboy.To bad you didn't get to that big pot before the tractor.The grinding stone is a Metate.

Thanks Greg, Eddie - I knew them things had a name but didn't know what it was. I tried digging and sifting out there but didn't find sh!& :). That sand and wind has a way of burying stuff for mellenia, then uncovering it later - best bet I found was to look on the surface..

Cool stuff, Paul. I've found some pottery pieces, but never anything that complete. There have been some amazing effigy pots excavated from some of the Mississippian mounds around here. I love hunting artifacts, but I tend to think they should have just left the mounds alone.

Oh come on Steve, its not like they are digging up someones grandma to get her jewelry and other prized possessions. OH WAIT, that is exactly what they are doing. I like to pick up the pieces I find laying on the ground around here, but I'm not going to dig any up. I know where there are a few grave sites, but I'm sure not telling the BLM or they will go dig them up. Justin

i'm with the other guys on leaving burial mounds alone. cool find on the pottery. the mescaleros have a res near Rui d oso in south central new mexico nowadays. they are pretty accomodating people if you wanna learn more about them. they are a lil touristy with the giant casino there though. the res is about an hour northwest of roswell in the mountains. i spoke with one of their bowyers at a festival there. he had some nice short horseback self bows. they were made with various woods from birch to juniper. most about 40-45 lb at 24-26 in. he wanted a pretty penny for them.
