Well been into archery for a long time....never made my own bow.
I'm fascinated by the California/west coast type paddle bows and such so been trying to get a shooter together....using red oak as it's cheap kindling for a beginner ;)
Broke the first one floor tillering :-[ broke the second one on the tree, bad hinge on one limb let go at full draw :-\ Finally with alot more patience some moderate success on the 3rd ;D
I went loosely from Ishi's measurements for his "short bow"...this one's 46"s nock to nock.
1-5/8 handle width, 2" on the limbs, down to 3/4" at the tips, simple pin style nocks.
Rawhide backed(dogbones & hide glue) deer sinew reinforced nocks. Buckskin handle wrap.
5-3/4" brace, pulls 52 lbs at 22" on the bathroom scale.
Sent about a hundred arrows threw it tonight and it's got about an 1" of set after unstringing..settles to about a 1/2" when rested.
Thanks for ALL your posts and getting me into a new hobby...there'll be more to come !

Nice work!
Both on the bow itself and the artwork.
It dont look like a "first" ;)

Tiller looks great as does the art-work.

Thanks for the good words folks....yep after the first two I was getting abit discouraged I will admit :-\
But stuck with it and eventually things went better. I just grabbed my kids paints and went crazy....it definately looks "hand done" close up ;D
Shot it some more today...seems pretty quick for what it is. It's now developed about an inch and a half of set which I guess I can accept given there was no heat treating done to the belly or reflex etc. I didn't want to try too many things for my first attempt.
I really wanted to try the Native style shooting techniques such as Ishi's etc. but none of my Longbows lended themselves to this....all are right handed shelf bows.
Thanks again.
-
that is some great work....more you make the better it gets...and 3rd bow is not bad at all..and beat an arrow just FLYS out of it..thanks for sharing..john

Real nice bow Willy, you tackled a tough one for your first and looks like you whooped it! Nice shape, decorations and tiller on that bow, can't wait to see your next one. :)

52 pounds out of Red Oak is DANGED GOOD! Especially when it is that SHORT! ...even dogbone backed, it is awesome that it held up. Way to go sir. I wouldn't worry much over the set you mentioned. It is kinda part of the experience, especially with Red Oak. Mine seem to shoot better after taking a bit of set anyway. :o
