hey guys,i am buying a new 45 this week.i have been looking at Kimbers, colts and Sigs.i am leaning towards a Sig scorpion.actually,i am stuck between Kimber and Sig.any imput would be helpful.i have never owned a 1911 and want to make the right decision.i am not a rich man and this is a big decision for me.i have saved for a long time for this.i trust you guys and want a honest opinion.thanks.
-
You have good taste! I like the kimber most they make parts that just drop in tight fit just good stuff but that can be said for the others on your list good luck JeffW
-
Thanks Jeff.i am having a real hard time between Kimber and Sig.they are all great pistols.the Sig fits my hand like a dream, but so does the Kimber .whats a guy to do?
-
Carried a couple for better than 16 years....but I'm old and only had one choice. I went with 1911 A-1 with a flat mainspring housing. They were single stack and everything hand fit. I preferred the "long" hammer. My "Sammy's" never let me down, ever. PS: when they became available I did give @ one a Wolf spring kit and a 18# recoil spring. (shot hot full patch ball)
Don't know the state of new Colts, for the old styles I really like my Colt and my Remington. By the way, both are full size "government" models, some of my buds on the department preferred the Colt Combat Commander and later the Officers Model.

i own a ATI brand 1911 and i love it its shoots just as good as my friends colt mine is the GI model no frills
-
thanks for your imput Rich.i really like those colts.i have the chance to buy a colt from a guy at work.it is a 1911 made in 1913 that has property of the united states marines stamped on the side.i haven't looked at it yet,but he wants 1500 dallors for it..like I said,i am not rich.i am a fan of the flat mainspring housing.i also buy a wolf spring kit for most of my pistols.i just bought one for my pa 63 feg.made it more pleasant to shoot.
-
Sterling,i looked at a few ati pistols tonite.i don't know much about them.
-
I think the sigs have an external extractor if that matters I think they deviated from the original design of the 1911. Some people want a 1911 that's designed exactly like the original 1911 down to a t but I'm sure they are still a great gun. I have been looking to get a 1911 too and can't decide what to get either. Does the pa 63 feg shoot the 9x18?
-
id recommend looking in to the ATI brand if you cant afford the big names iv had mine for two years now and have had no issues and they make a few different models i can post pics if you like i think i paid 460$ for mine a few years ago

Grew up shooting Colt and Springfield 1911A1 pistols as father is retired Marine...owned a couple myself as well since then as adult. That being said it was typically not to get a good, reliable, accurate slabside without spending some money. Kimber upped that game and forced the others to start also offering weapons that were already worked on for better triggers, polishing feed ramp, working on extractors, quicker hammers, better buffer springs especially for +P ammo and better sights and ergonomics.
If I was in the hunt for a good solid accurate and carry capable 1911 styled weapon I think you have it right going with Kimber or SIG. A couple points though....
The Kimber is pretty much a true 1911....parts are interchangeable but it is more refined but also a little more expensive up front than the old workhorses...though the fit and finish is outstanding with a lot of models and sizes to choose from. You cant go wrong with a Kimber especially one of they worked over Carry models.
The SIG is an outstanding 1911 styled weapon but they have changed a couple things and added a couple changes of their own as well...so while most of the parts will interchange with a Colt or Springfield...not all of them will. That being said it is a VERY accurate weapon.
If you are a SIG guy like I am (P220, P239, P226, SIG556, etc) then would likely go with SIG...as having one that is true to the 1911 in every way is not my concern.
If you want the best out of the box consumer level 1911 pistol for reliability, accuracy, form and finish...I would have to recommend the Kimber to be honest. I love the SIG but the Kimber is a fine weapon without breaking the bank and without any modifications as all the custom work is done BEFORE you get it.... My 2 cents...
Then I would spend a lot of time with an empty weapon getting used to the external safety on the SA only weapon and carrying cocked and locked if using for carry defense.
Congrats on choosing a workhorse and very good weapon.....

I just got a sig nightmare fastback this weekend. I looked for several months and at several styles and the sig won me over. Now it's true it's not an exact 1911 but that wasn't a priority for me, I was looking for a good tough reliable carry gun and a lot of the folks I talked to at local gun shops and ranges said Kimbers were nice but that due to their tight tolerances that they could be finicky once dirty. A lot of them said there'd trade their Kimber for a sig if offered. The price was right for me also, 1000 for a sig or 1300 for a kimber. I have yet to shoot my sig but the ones I shot before we're awesome and the one kimber I shot was good too, but there's a reason the military and law enforcement use sigs
-
I have had several 1911's, and have more than one now. .. :)
Of the options you listed I'd go with the Kimber...
Your Co worker's Colt is a Collector Piece.
I would avoid this piece for Shooting or Carry...
But would Love to Collect it.
Just my two cents...
:)

Sea Bass - Of the guns mentioned, I'd go with the Kimber. Have You had Your hands on a Springfield 1911 ? I've been a 1911 Guy for years. My daily carry piece is a Wilson, but also have a Springfield that runs a close second. My take, is the Springfields are the best bang for the Buck of the "production" 1911's out there bar none - affordable & reliable ! Bob
-
I'll throw this out there as food for thought. Love the 1911, but my favorite 45 ACP is the S&W 4506. I like the DA/SA on it. It's all steel so it's heavy but it can take a pounding and is reliable. Feeds any ammo I put thru it, felt recoil is less and very accurate. Because of it's size, and not being one of the new polymers, it is out of vogue and can be had pretty cheap right now.
-
SIG, Better ergonomics and you can't beat the de-cocker DA/SA feature for safety. Rugged and reliable.
Colt 1911, time tested rugged and reliable, never felt comfortable carrying cocked and locked. Can't overlook the sentimentality of that configuration, but for a new to gun type shooter, the SIG will be easier to get good with. Everyone is different, so if you have the chance to run a magazine through the choices you have narrowed down to , TAKE IT! Then you'll have a better idea what fits you.

Only one way to carry a 1911 - Cocked-Locked and ready to ROCK ;)    >:D! Bob

8) I carry every day. I carry a Springfield v-10 1911 and will never go back. i have several 1911s but my choice is the Springfield. it not a full size its same frame as the colt commander. My wife also carries and she carrier a Kimber also a shorty but she can shoot it one handed effectively. no matter which one you get if you intend to shoot hollow points in it get a good gun smith to ramp the feed.

Don't matter which one you get... It's new holster you build fir it... Will be beautiful...... ;)
Thanks Leroy

first off, thank you guys for giving some great advice.i will one day own a colt,Kimber and a Sig.i can,t afford a Wilson,Ed Brown,Les Baeur or a Nighthawk.i shot an Ed Brown and fell in love with it.it was 2800 dollars.way out of my league.i will be spending a grand on mine.i have many guns that I carry concealed, this one is just for the range.i'll be sure to post the one I choose.thank you again for all your advice.btw Daniel,my pa 63 feg is a 9x18.great little gun for the price.
-
Don't overlook the Springfield and Colt. Hard to beat the originals, and the Springers especially don't come with that inflated Kimber price tag. I had a Springfield 1911A1 GI model, and loved it. Unfortunately, some methhead who broke my door down while I was at work loved it even more. I have also heard a lot of good things about the Ruger 1911s.
-
I may be a little late chiming in on this but here's my 2 cents. All 3 are excellent guns. I have a colt series 70 government, and I love it. I've shot the Kimber but not the sig. But I gotta say that my colt just had that feel to it when I put it in my hand, and I'm accurate with it. But most of all, it will eat any bullet I put in it!! During the recent ammo shortage I was buying anything I could get my hands on; reloads, even the cheapo Russian wolf ammo; it liked all of it. Never a single failure. Mine had a polished feed ramp when I bought it. What decided for me was a buddy had a colt and he let me shoot his before I bought mine. He dug this thing out of the bottom of his collection and I swear it looked like it hadn't been cleaned in forever; it shot everything we put through it that day. I don't recommend not cleaning your gun by no means, just saying that the colt ain't picky.
-
Wanted to add this. If you buy one of the older used guns, do not shoot the +P ammo through it. I cracked the guide rod bushing on mine from +P. Cheap and easy to replace though. Funny thing was it still shot several mags afterwards. I didn't know it was cracked until I took it apart for cleaning one day. I was lucky to not have caused more damage.
-
Hillbilly,i am going to get a colt at a later date.i am a colt fan.i have to have a colt, they started It all.Stick, that stuff about +p ammo is good to know.thanks guys.
-
I'll throw this out there as food for thought. Love the 1911, but my favorite 45 ACP is the S&W 4506. I like the DA/SA on it. It's all steel so it's heavy but it can take a pounding and is reliable. Feeds any ammo I put thru it, felt recoil is less and very accurate. Because of it's size, and not being one of the new polymers, it is out of vogue and can be had pretty cheap right now.
if we are throwing things out there...LOL. My SIG P220, no rail, early 90s build date is the best .45acp I have ever fired...and have owned and or shot Colt, Colt Commander, Colt Gold Cup, Springfield 1911A1, Remington 1911, Kimber, and Auto Ordnance 1911...not prettiest...not best trigger...not MOST accurate but was and is the best all around .45acp I have ever fired or owned.
-
Brock,i have a new smith and Wesson mp 45.i am really liking it even though it is polymer framed.i liked how it fits my hand.was going to get a glock, but It felt like a brick in my hand.lol
-
Glad you gave up on the Block and went with the 1911 style.
Nobody has mentioned the Taurus. Once upon a time you would have had to put $300 in aftermarket parts and $200 in gunsmith fees to get a Taurus to work tolerably, but they were bought out by Magnum Research and the quality has gone up quite a bit. I have one with almost no trigger creep and it breaks like glass. I have been told with a little adjusting, that creep is gone, too. I have fedd this thing round ball ammo and several different hollow points, including one so extreme that the round looked like a wastepaper basket! No feed problems at all.
I couldn't go even the price of the low end Kimbers or the Sig's and asked several old timers at First Stop here in Rapid City. They were patient with me over the course of a year and even held back the Taurus I eventually bought because the trigger pull was the best they had come across in a long time. They universally were luke warm on the Remington 1911's, saying they all had poor trigger action.
I also went with the Blackhawk paddle type holster with the "lock". I love the way it indexes my trigger finger to safe position in order to draw the weapon!
All in all, if it is a 1911, I still like it. The history, the design, the fit to my hand, etc...and best of all, the .45 is authoritative. And the sound of the action being racked translates into all known languages clearly.
-
Ahh yes the Taurus, I've got their pt745 not a bad little 45 but mine needed tweaking to the magazines and catch. It would drop the mags during firing or if you grabbed the bottom of the mag and twisted side to side it would drop. Still voting sig😉
-
I repaired hundreds of M1911A1s in the army. They must have been decades old and still worked fine. Wasn't impressed with the M9. You can't go wrong with Springfield Armory. They're made by Imbel, the Brazilian military arms manufacturer. That said, I have a Sig P220.
-
I had shot colts forever and then got a Sig. It was very accurate and smooth but the grip didn't feel right. Sold it and got a Para-Ord,double action 1911. I couldn't get used to the long trigger pool so sold it,too. I ended up with a Kimber double stack with a small hand grip for a D-S.
Chris Cade's gunsmith reworked it for me and it is the fastest, smoothest 1911 I've ever owned. He said there are a few issues with Kimber that need to be fixed by a real gunsmith though.
-
if you have a store close to you go and hold as many as you can so you can see what feels best in your hand. im sticking with my ATI "amarican tactical imports" brand id put it against any big name that's out there. even my friend that has a colt was impressed with how it shot and handled. one thing id do if i was you is to invest in some good mags i buy chip McCormick mags they have a good hefty spring and are very reliable. the cheaper stock mags and just cheaper mags they sell at the big stores springs tend to weaken and your last round or two will not feed at all
-
Jdub, how did you attatch the flint lock to a 1911?lol
Sterling,i am way ahead of you.i went to the local gunshop and held every 1911 the had.i was in there for more that 2 hours.i kept going back to that Sig scorpion.getting it tomarrow.
-
sweet 8) i heard there pretty good 1911s
-
Congratulations! A .45 is always a good choice.
-
Hey Sky arrow You reminded me , those ATI 's ,, the home office is about 45 mins from me I saw them at a gun show those are sweet as all heck!!! but what is funny to me is there is only one or two dealers within like 50 miles from me ???? and yes I would buy one ,, hell two for the price of a Kimber guys I second what skyarrows said !! but I do love me some Kimbers JeffW
-
the navy seals are carrying the sig and it has all the features I am looking for.it fits my small hands like a glove, and has a reliable rating for ball and hollowpoints.it also has a ceracote finish over stainless steel, night sights, checkering on the front and backstrap, flat mainspring housing, hogue g10 pirana grips and a 4 and a half pound trigger pull.it also has a rail up front for lasers or lights.i believe this is the one for me.i am going to go get it after work tomarrow, but I am also going to hold more Kimbers.i will post my choice tomarrow.thank you for all of your imput.you guys are tops in my book.
-
yeah jeffhalfrack i ordered mine from gallery of guns because there wasn't a dealer near by keeping them in stock :) im in love with my 1911 i have big hands so a thicker grip works great for me

-
perty :) 8)
-
thanks Sterling.where did you get the handles on yours?did it come with them?
-
i found mine on ebay there are hundreds of kinds on there. i was worried about the acrylic handles being slick and not having a good grip and i was wrong my grip is as good as the stock grips i had :) the acrylics are a tab bit thicker tho so if yo have tiny hands you will tell the difference i have big hands so it dont bother me
-
You know you gotta bring that Sig. to Moon Tree, don't ya? I ordered a new toy that should arrive tomorrow or Friday--a Rossi M92 lever action in a .357 as a companion gun for my Blackhawk.

Nice choice!
-
i'll bring it to moontree Dave.you are gonna love that levergun.i let mine go in a trade, but now I want it back.
-
Good looking hand cannon there seabass. I love 1911 style pistols. Besides bringing that to Moontree, you need to bring a crapload of ammo as well!!

Nice looking shooting iron
Thanks Leroy

Having been a firearms dealer for 25 years, I would have to say You made the right choice with the SIG. IN MY OPINION....Kimbers are over rated, over priced, and of inferior quality to many of the other 1911 style firearms available today. I have carried and sold many SIG's and 2 Kimbers. The SIG/Browning I have has fired in excess of 10K rounds with hardly a glitch. The last Kimber I owned(about 2 years ago)..Broke after 200 rounds. Not a fan of the Yonkers boys...The oldest and Most reliable combat tested(Honduras, Panama, Gulf War (parts 1 and 2) and Afghanistan...has been a 1986 Model Auto Ordnance 1911A1.
Both of the Kimbers were Custom Job compact models. I don't know if that makes a difference, But I would not stake My life on one. My S/B has been My go to piece for personal protection and range time since 1996. It was also my back up in all of the above locations, and My primary carry as a Gov't Security Contractor..
Enjoy the SIG. You made the right choice..

I own a Kimber 1911 Pro-Carry II; great gun but I'm not a handgun expert and have never owned or used any other 1911 handgun. The Kimber seems a little heavy and difficult to take down and clean. Maybe all 1911's are. It's very accurate and fun to shoot.
-
The Sig 1911 is our departmental issue weapon. It was selected after a pretty thorough study by our resident firearms guy (who looks at handguns the way some of us do longbows!). We tested a bunch of guns and I don't think you can go wrong with the Sig 1911. All of our officers seem to be very happy with it. Lots of us were Glock shooters prior to this and it gave some of us pause to think about giving up those high capacity mags. After their qualification scores went up so drastically, I think they are feeling better about it. This "spray and pray" mentality that seems to be getting worse is something our outfit is training us to avoid. Knowing that you are confined to eight shots, you actually have to learn the craft of running the gun, and it has helped our department a lot. Most fights are over in two or three shots. Hitting your target is what matters and that Sig will do that as well as or better than anything else on the market. ;)
-
thanks Mohawk and Howard.i did a lot of research before I chose the Sig.i haven't shot it yet,but it seems to be a high quality pistol.it has everything I wanted in a production 1911.the trigger is about 4 and a half pounds.it is very smooth and locks up like a bank vault.checkering on the front and backstrap.low mount night sights.the fit from frame to slide is very tight.the grips are Hogue g 10 pirana scale and feel great.i feel this is gonna be a really great gun.this is my first 1911,but I am no stranger to quality.this is gun number 62 in my collection.i am really happy with it so far.i need to go shoot it before I give my final thoughts.i need to break it in.thanks again guys,i really appreciate all your opinions.
-
