Title: Elm question
Post by: Frode on January 07, 2014, 04:25:19 pm
Hi all,
I've often read or heard that elm has a tough, interlocked grain, and I've used it successfully in a few bows backed with hickory.  I have a few boards left, and they are probably about as good as what I've used in the past, but, do you think these are good enough to use by themselves?  I've boosted the contrast way up on this shot, so that the grain and run off shows better.  The actual colors are a lot more subtle.
What are your thoughts?
Thanks,
Frode

With plain sawed boards that much grain "overlap" that's showing on the broad sides I would definitely back those Mr. Frode. I don't think you have enough thickness to chase a ring even if you were so inclined.

Anyway, just one opinion, eh?

Thanks, guys!  I kind of figured as much, but better to ask!
