At my daughters house recently and noticed a bow high up on a dusty shelf in the garage and pulled it down for a look. It was one I had made about 7 years ago and completely forgotten about. At that time she had just gotten married and bought a house and wanted a painted bow to hang for display only. Snakey osage from a 65 yr. old fence post, painted back and suede handle wrap. No drawn or braced photos here, just some pics. of the painted back and snakey limbs. The string on it was made way to long intentionally at her request to keep anyone from from actually
taking it into the backyard and shooting arrows from it. Just thought I'd show a few pics. of the paint here to those who like decorative bows. :)

Beautiful bow.

Nice!

That's just beautiful! I've built a few from old fence posts. Itching compares to OLD Osage in my book! Thanks for sharing :)

Thanks for Sharing B2

Thanks for the kind words guys, very much appreciated.
Heres a few more painted designs on a few old osage bows;
-The one with diamond pattern is rawhide backed osage, also old fence post wood.
-The one with crawdad symbols was copied from pics. of old native beaded moccasins I saw in a book.
-The one with flower symbols was copied from pic. of old native leather tobacco pouch and was made for my youngest
daughter 10 years ago when she was only 10 yrs. old.

Wow! Awesome!
-
Cool art work as usual Greg. Your good at what you do man.
-
Thanks again guys, your all too kind.
These bows were some of my earlier ventures in painting/decorating of bows and the designs aren't exactly suited to the style of the bows. Now when I decide to do a more decorative bow I try to more closely match the painted design
to the style of bow somewhat. I still enjoy the decorative part of the craft of bow making as much the rest of it.
It's all fun though and the limits to what one can do to make each bow different are endless and keep the hobby interesting.

You are a true artist. Great colors and symmetry. I love the look of your bows :)
-
Any chance of seeing the rest of those bows? Tips, full draw pics, etc.?
-
It would be to embarrassing to show more of these, real wide tips, whip tillered, and generally way overbuilt and poorly crafted specimens at best. :- These bows were made before I discovered this website and learned all I now know thanks to you guys on here. :) I do have another bow I finished yesterday that I may post later today.
-
Awesome... I look forward to it! You can retiller the other bows. No harm in making them better. ;)
-
They sure are beautiful bows! Jawge

That kind of work takes imagination a real good eye. You obviously have the talent!
-
Great stuff love decorated bows.
-
Outstanding work! Could you offer some details as to techique? type of paint/dye, brushes, etc.? Not trying to get at any secrets but that kind of detail is inspirational! Thanks
-
Thanks again guys, appreciate it.
Smoke, the paints were all just artist acrylics and the base coats on three of the bows was a color wash using acrylic glazing medium in attempt to make the backround look like old leather. Hard to explain how to do it but basically you
lay down one solid color then blot on one or more other colors mixed with the glaze and manipulate those with a very soft brush moving them around to get the effect you like. I always finish with a few coats of clear finish to protect over everything.
Thanks for your interest, hope the explanation was clear.

Way cool! You certainly have a knack for dolling up your bows! Josh

I always look for painted stuff on your bows when you post one. I really like the way you do that. Cool painted backs, I've done a similarly dotted thing on my very first bow and I remember it took some patience and persistence.
What I like best about the display bow is how the handle is tied, with the beads and the string flaring out.
