Title: simple hickory self bow
Post by: Lee Lobbestael on January 01, 2014, 08:52:10 pm
Hey guys, I don' post very often but I spend a lot of time admiring all the bows you guys post here. Here is a simple hickory self bow I just finished made from a tree I cut from next to my swamp this summer. It is 65" ntn and 49#@28". It took about an inch of set and is very snappy for hickory. I dried it next to my woodstove for a while and heat treated the belly and I think this helped. Its nothing fancy but I have a passion for simple no frills self bows. Gonna take it out rabbit and squirrel hunting sat if it warms up a little.

Love those kind of bows....first few I made I thought they had to be real fancy.....but OH yes, I found out it's not necessary.  I like rabbit and squirrel hunting too.  :)

Nice job on that one Lee. I like the way the colors fade from the heat treating I'm guessing? Or is that a stain job? Tiller looks good too. Simple is always good, but that one looks pretty fancy to me. I like it!

Thanks guys! StickMan47 actually that is the stain job. I used black and brown rit dye and sanded the middle to get it to fade from dark to light to dark again. Oh and feel free to critique the tiller, I'm by no means an expert.

Great job. Nice tiller. 48# is something you can shoot all day long then wake up and do it all over again.  I like my bows to be pretty much a similar weight

Nice looking bow - I like the stain technique.  What did you seal it with?

Thanks for the nice words guys! Mwosborn, I sealed it with a wipe on poly. Not exactly primitive but very durable and long lasting

Thanks guys. Yeah I have a lot of hickory on my land and a lot of oak. I have some white oak staves that should be dry by now that I'm planning on trying next. Have never used white oak.

Great looking bow.  Most of mine are similar to this one. I too like simple and love hickory.

I see you left the heel of the grip deeper to make for a angled grip allowing for more of high wrist grip.  How do you like that? I been thinking of doing something similar and trying it out.

I have tried the low wrist grip on several bows and I just seem to shoot better with a slightly higher wrist. I dont like high wrist like commercial recurves but a slight tilt forward with a slight index feels good to me.

Good bow!
I also shoot better with higher wrist and it is less strain with high weight bows too.
