This is one I finished Sunday afternoon. It is for a friends son who is 9 years old. His mother is of Indian heritage and quite knowledgeable about Indian material culture. She wanted a bow for he and his dad for Christmas. I posted dads bow a week or so ago and she picked them both up Monday morning, along with some arrows. Santa will leave them under the tree. This is some type of Maple sent to me from Kansas, I believe it's Sugar Maple. Never worked with Maple before and so this was a bit of an experiment. Well pleased with the wood. It's surprisingly flexible and very light. Somewhat wamperty in shape with a pretty serious knot on the bottom limb, roller coasters and some prop twist, but despite all that...it's a bow. Hope he and dad enjoy shooting them together!
Sugar Maple
Bendy handle
52 inches NTN
1 3/4 inches wide thru the middle 1/3 tapering to 5/8 inch tips
30ish pounds at 24 inches tillered out to 25 inches
Sinew wraps
Horse hair tuft
Left a little cambium on for color, finished with spray poly
Fastflite string.
Thanks for looking. Merry Christmas to everyone and may God bless your holiday!

Beautiful bow...sure looked like hickory until I slowed down and read your post. Nice work 8)
-
Very nice looking - the tiller looks great. I bet they love em!
-
Nice Plains bow!
-
Wow that really sweet. There's like 50 million sugar maples around me and I never consider them for bow wood. Hmmm
-
Slimbob, that is absolutely outstanding, sir. Not only is the decoration just perfect but so is the braced profile......that leaves the full draw. It is about as close as a fella can make a "half circle" not to mention them string angles, past 90 and got to believe ya got every bit of that bow. Just beautiful

He should have a big smile on his face when he opens that.

Thanks Rich. I consider your commentary on these short bows as close to gospel, and your critique as the highest compliment. Thank you Sir!
Thanks for the kind words fellas.

Thats the coolest Christmas present that a nine year old could get, that a pony to shoot off the back of.
That bow came out real nice Slim, nice looking with a sweet bend. Well done.

-
That is a great looking bow slimbob! Cool to see a nice sugar maple bow. :)
-
Well, I certainly love plains style bows! I was really curious whether or not that piece of maple would make a decent bow. I love the way it turned out. The bow looks great, and the wood chips are going to make for some really nice smoked backstrap from the doe you killed.
-
sweet bend on that one.

Just a quick note to say thanks to all. I received a picture and a note from them. Sounds like they've been shooting them for a few days now. We will all get together and shoot next week or so.

Perfect tiller, you used every bit of that stick! ;)... Brian

"Every time a kid gets a bow, an angel gets his wings!"
Apologies to Frank Capra, and everyone else that worked on the movie "It's A Wonderful Life" for mangling their quote.
Nice work on that shortie, Slimmo, you really put it all together.
