Title: Arrows of Old!!!
Post by: artcher1 on December 23, 2013, 02:10:43 pm
Well, not that old. Things a little slow over here so I thought I'd show some goodies. I believe these sourwood shoot arrows went to Chris Cade a few years ago. Showed 'em before, but a lot of new guys around, so I thought I'd give them a peek too.

So if any of you guys have any "arrows of old", lets see 'em.........Art

Killer set of arrows Art, very nice. I have some scattered older arrows from sets made in the past although only a few have survived from each set, I abuse and break a lot of 'em. :D

Thanks BB! I really doubt if these arrows ever got shot. I think Cade is more of a collector of my arrows then anything else. I think that's when I started writing on my arrows, "Caution: not for display, for making meat only". ;D

I have very few of my older arrows if any. I either loose them or give them away. I do still have most of my Artcher1 arrows, some collectors items but many have been used over the years.   ;)

I haven't been making my own arrows for that long of time maybe 10 years but here are some that I donated to the St. Jude auction over on TG about 5 years ago.

Heres an assortment of what remains of a half dozen different sets of arrows I made in the past. All these had 11 sisters at one time but now only one or two remain from each family. The broken one on the right was the first set I ever made and that arrow took my very first selfbow killed deer 14 years ago, the buck whose rack is in the picture.
None of these are what I would call well crafted arrows but more recent ones are turning out better and I'm trying to
hone my arrow making skills a little at a time.

Sorry Fred, meant to comment on how nice that set of yours was before I posted above. Real good looking set of arrows Fred, bet they did well at the benefit auction.

Now that's a cool idea on that rack BB. Looks like some nice "arrows of old" there too!

Here's my first "killer". Unfinished Osage arrow made from the scrap of the Osage selfbow I took the deer with. Shame it didn't survive. Finished making the arrow that morning and took it out unfinished that afternoon. 8) Many moons ago also...........Art

Here are a few of mine from a few years back.
The 2 on the left are made from black walnut shafts and the 2 on the right are sourwood.

Well, that's all for tonight. Photobucket is screwing with me again.  >:(

Art, the first time I saw your work was a couple arrows Steve Gardner got. I've been drooling over what you do ever since. Thanks very much for posting these pictures.

Guy, yeah, those arrows I gave Steve were some of my first bamboo arrows. I'd like to think my knowledge and workmanship has improved somewhat since then. Thanks for looking!

Nice arrows Pat! I like the walnut for arrows myself. More durable than most folks think. And the only thing that might beat a sourwood arrow is your hill cane :'(..............Art

Those are Beautiful arrows guys! I have a cane and a walnut blunt from Pat. Love those arrows! Art I had the honor of holding your beautifully crafted arrows that you sent Stringstretcher. Needless to say I was quite humbled to hold those works of "Art"
Really inspired me on perfecting my primitive arrows. Got a long way to go!

Great thread. Thanks for sharing!

Arrows, like bows, should also be a labor of love Matt. Personally, I can't separate the two. One's no good without the other in my mind. I made my first "really" primitive arrow right along side my first "really" primitive bow. If you're going to have fun doing this, might as well have twice the fun. ;) Thanks for the kind words..........Art

That's all PB will allow today.  >:(

Art, there is always a bundle of hill cane for you when I harvest if you want it.

I appreciate the offer Pat, but they would more than likely set around and collect dust. Doing very little these days because of my health. Thanks again my friend.........Art

Some really awesome work  by all.  I wish I could contribute, but all mine are in no way the quality of you guys, but I will keep learning.  I know I have learned more from Art and Pat than most people should have a right to, and I really appreciate.  Just need to hone a few more skills and get to where I can compete with you guys.  Thanks for posting and giving us all something to try and be as good at.

The one thing I do know, is how to make a really nice poplar arrow from boards...lol

Yes you do Charlie. I can't wait for the next batch.  ;)

Last set I made from those you sent me Charles turned out great. I think there was only plus/minus 4 grains in a set of twelve. Broke that up into two sets of six and their weights were close to dead even per set.

You bet Pat........Art

Well I was cleaning up the other day and I dug up some very, very old arrows that I had made when I was a little boy. I must say I have improved greatly since these arrows were made but it was nice to look back and see where my interest in primitive and traditional archery was sparked  :)

this arrow was made when I was about 7 years old, I made it completely by myself and it has been shot (and repaired) many times, although the fletching has definitely seen better days. made from bracken (a very straight growing fern shoot that is common here in New Zealand)
(http://i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z340/strider4142/Primitive%20archer/GEDC0550.jpg) (http://s1184.photobucket.com/user/strider4142/media/Primitive%20archer/GEDC0550.jpg.html)
these arrows were made at age 9 from bamboo stakes I bought at a gardening shop and craft feathers. I have about 20 of these left but these are the better condition of the bunch.
(http://i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z340/strider4142/Primitive%20archer/GEDC0549.jpg) (http://s1184.photobucket.com/user/strider4142/media/Primitive%20archer/GEDC0549.jpg.html)
this arrow is my latest primitive style projectile from my childhood before moving on to a more traditionally 'correct' style of archery  8) again it is made from bracken and fletched with gull feathers
(http://i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z340/strider4142/Primitive%20archer/GEDC0546.jpg) (http://s1184.photobucket.com/user/strider4142/media/Primitive%20archer/GEDC0546.jpg.html)
All arrows together with a 30" aluminium arrow for size comparison  :)
(http://i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z340/strider4142/Primitive%20archer/GEDC0555.jpg) (http://s1184.photobucket.com/user/strider4142/media/Primitive%20archer/GEDC0555.jpg.html)
Hope that was interesting for you all.
cheers, Kaleb

Good stuff guys! First thing that catches my eye is straightness. You guys do a fantastic job there!

Kaleb, yes, you certainly can see where you were heading with those arrows at that young age. Thanks for posting those pics.........Art

Like Art, I always look at the straightness of a shoot/bamboo/hand planed dowel or what ever you started with.  I would love to see the material you started you arrow from, and then how straight you got it.  Twisted, bends,, knots, nodes, just as you cut the material, and then the finished product as straight as you could get it.  Hopefully someone or a lot will post some pictures of this.   PLEASE????

Charles, I think what Paul Comstock described in his book about slow-motion filming of returning bow limbs exhibiting signs of "fits and jerks", IMO, can also be said for oscillating/rotating arrows. Bows built with fewer "fits and jerks" make for a more stable shooting bow. Same can be said for arrows. So the more perfect the arrow material, the more perfect the arrow. More bends, knots, nodes, kinks, grain run-outs or what have yous, the more "fits and jerks" you'll have in the finished arrow. Key to any good arrow is proper selection to begin with..........Art
