I was asked to try my hand at building a static and accepted the challenge on the condition that expectations were low. The more I watch the true craftsman on here the lower I rate my own skills. Still I was up for the challenge and set off to learn something new.

I chose the stick 3rd from the right cause of its large rings and straight grain. There was a small amount of checking on the back, but after removing a few rings I was off and running. Laid out some lines and quickly had it down to size.

After cleaning it up and further dimension reductions I needed to even it up abit from side to side and end to end. So I threwh her on the form.

I was super antsy about the next step cause I've never tried hooks this severe, but after talking it over with Chris I got out the pot and started boiling some water. As it turns out, my nervousness was unfounded... This was much easier than I thought.

After the steamed in hooks had several days to rest I began the slow process of tillering. I had already floor tillered before, but the statics had added a whole new level of problems. I was extremely focused on keeping this an honest 50 pounder and so there were a lot of extra exercise sessions. In the end I was right on target and my patience was rewarded.

For tips, I cut a couple pieces from a blonde water buffalo horn and glued them up. These 2 happen to have more dark in them than I had first expected, but still a very nice fit!

Next step was skins and after much discussion this beautiful set of blotched water snakes was chosen.

Left was the sanding (and sanding, and sanding...) then finish was applied, and the bow was shot in. Turned out to be one of the hardest hitting 50# bows I've made. No nonsense about her, if she wasn't already committed, I would be keepin her. 66" overall and 50# @ 28". This was a fun project!!
Here's some candy shots...

To me, that one looks pretty good for your first static recurve! How about a full draw shot???
-
Great finish work. Can't wait to see the FD!
:)
-
She looks sweet Scott. Gotta love that horn man! Each overlay is different from the last. Ive seen it drawn, but these kind folks haven't...................so post it already man!
-
Well I don't have an updated FD shot but this one is close. I have since worked the outters a bit to get them moving a touch more. If the recipient wants to post a final FD I will let him.

-
That is AWESOME!!! nice job! Really nice bow!
-
That is one nice looking bow. Great job on it Scott.
-
Wouldn't know from looking at that bow that it was your first static build. Real nicely done bow in all aspects, pleasing to the eye and bends like a shooter should. Well done Stringman.
-
Nice looking static curves on that one Scott, I'll bet the finished FD looks pure after you tweak the tiller a bit. I also love the nock and tip work you did. noth'n like a nice tight static bend. I'm getting all fired up to start my tightest static bent bow ever this winter might add a little sinew for....what ever reason........ toooo!
Again, nice first static Scott.

Nice Scott.....now who's the unlucky customer ::)
I'm gonna let him decide if he wants to be connected to it, before I go naming him.
-
Beautiful work...and good pics. Especially love the pattern on those skins
Yep they are beautiful! And this was the best of the sets I have!
-
A fine looking bow indeed!
-
Thanks to everyone, for the words of encouragement! Truly means a lot to be acknowledged from this group of folks.
-
Nice bow, Scott. I love static recurves. You did a nice job on bending the curves too. Its hard to see the full draw profile because the background is so busy but it looks like your lower limb bends early and straightens out towards the tip.

"Understatement" comes to mind right away!
That thing is a beauty! - I don't like shelfs on selfbows, but for this handle section I make an exception. 8) 8) 8)

Great, looks perfect, I can't see any flat spot. :) Markus
-

Thats a beauty, you underestimate yourself.
-
Thanks again guys! I've for shore had good teachers! Only thing I was doing before I fell in with this group was using a hatchet. Seems like everything else I picked up here from someone or nother.
-
Very nice Sir in every aspect.
-
Never done a static myself but after seeing your great job I will have to give it a try.
-

Wow Scott!! Just wow amigo ;) Folks that bow is headed my way!! On here over time Scott and I have developed a great friendship. A kinship based on the love of primitive skills, family, kids and life in general.. I'm not a talker :o but we text often and it's a great friendship. When Pearl Drums posted a static for trade a while back I asked Scott if he had ever made a static recurve.. He said no..
I sat on the idea for sometime then brought it up again. Scott said I haven't made one, but I can sure try. We worked out a deal. At first we thought spotted king snake skins, but then I thawed these skins and Scott and I knew it should be blotched. I sent him the sets and told him to pick his set out of the two and to put the other on the static..
Wouldn't you know he put the prettier one on my bow. That's just the type of guy he is. Then one day he asked if I wanted exotic wood or buffalo horn.. No question.. Horn.. He was happy to hear it. Then came naming her. I asked if he had a name. No.. Do I.. I thought on it.. I said Navidad.. Christmas in spanish. He said he wanted something in Spanish, but also something that conveyed our friendship.
I thought on it.. Amistad means friend in Spanish. Arco de Amistad. Literal translation is Bow of friends or as it translates-- friendship bow.
The challenge to build a static recurve, the master bow, every detail of it and the wiliness to put his best talents both God given and made by nature makes this a truly special gift and and even more special of a bow deserving of her name.
I've always wanted a static Osage bow and this Christmas that's what I'm getting!! Wow.. Life is good!! Can't hardly wait until she gets here.
Scott, my only question is do I wait until Christmas to open the package?
Cipriano
-
Man you know I cant make you wait. ;)
-
Sounds like a fantastic friendship, congrats..............

This post made me happy. Heck of a bow.

Good deal Scott. I'm tearing into that package when it arrives. ;)man if it comes tomorrow it will be a white Christmas..

-
Very beautiful, great finish work!
-
Like that one. Nice shape and the combination of osage, snake skin and buffalo horn overlay tips are awesome. :-)
-
I came home today to a long white tube package on our porch. I carefully unwrapped the package and was speechless to find my new hunting bow. Everything about the bow is perfect. The water buffalo tips, the skins, the knot on the bottom limb, the seam joining the skins together, and of course those graceful static recurves. The pictures DONT do this bow justice.
Now the bad news. On November 26 I had major surgery and can't lift, pull, push or strain myself beyond 10 lbs until January 7. That's a hard thing, but come January 7, I will string her and shoot her and post full draw pics.
Scott, thank you again for the great bow. I like everything about it ;)

Scott,
Thank you for posting the picture for me! I couldn't get it to work. When I finally able to draw and shoot this awesom bow it was on Jan 7. It's a smooth drawing, fast shooting and hard hitting bow! ;) I couldn't be happier.
No I'm seeing the ortho doc tomorrow about my shoulder and a pulled thoratic muscle in my back.. So since I shot it I haven't been able to pick it up again, but I'm hoping to get recovered from all this soon and shoot that bow daily.
Thank you mucho mi amigo!!
Cipriano

This is beautiful work. You mentioned looking at the skills of true craftsmen and feeling less confident. Thats how I feel now! Once again excelent work.
-
That looks awesome Scott!
-
How did you make your form for the reflex? I'm considering trying it myself
-
Can't remember what circumference I used (maybe a coffee can) but I cut it out on the bandsaw.
-
that bow speaks for your talent.very nicely done.
-
Beautiful work man, that's a fine specimen!

Awesome bow man! I have to get me some Osage.
