Ahhh…..I feel a little vindication. I’ve had some struggles this year with bow making. I think it’s been a combination of trying to push the limits, going to fast, and getting a bit of bad wood. After all of that – I was able to pull one out! And it was all worth it.
I am very happy how this one turned out. It has actually taken the title of My favorite shooter.”
I posted a little while back about thinking I had some bad hickory….I know now that was it for sure. This is the OTHER piece I got that same day. I’m saving the rest of that board for backing strips.
I don’t have a name for it yet…and I originally was thinking of doing a fair bit of artwork on it but…it just didn’t feel right. I like this one as is. It has it’s own personality and I like it. I feel like my confidence has been restored.
I guess this is sort of a Molly recruve…..

Very nicely done! Great tiller. Any idea what the mass is? If you can weigh it (in grams) that would be valuable info.
-
ADB, I will take a wildguess at about 600 grams or 20.5 to 21.5 oz.
-
Nice looking bow.

Thanks man! You should also look at blackhawk's posts. He is the king of this design and you will see plenty more inspiration for sure. His bows are insane!.

Thanks! It's definately my favorite bow to date. Just got back from the range and it was so fun to shoot!

adb and Badger THANK YOU! - it's actually 22oz. I think the fades near the levers could be reduced more or even the levers themsevles. I trapped the levers and my original plan was to reduce them more but I chickened out. will try it on my next one.

beautiful work !! that one should be a joy to shoot
ken75! THANKS! Where you been man? I haven't seen you on here much for a while? You "ken 200 yet?" Thanks again dude!
-
....probably could have done that all in one post.. :o
THANK YOU EVERYONE!
Further satisfaction came earlier today when shooting at the range with my daughter and bro. I recently finished up a set of arrows spined at 50-55 left 31" and they match this bow perfectly. I was getting kill shots left and right!!! It was awesome!
Thank you EVERYONE for all the kind words!
-
Beautiful bow!!! What is the stain and finish you used?
-
thats dead sexy! reminds me of beautiful woman in a sleek black catsuit. (btw i said a catsuit thats sleek, not sleek in a catsuit)
-
Looks pretty sweet, buddy. You should get that in the BOM contest! You sure make some pretty bows.
-
Thats a good looking tiller wind.

FRITZ - I used Fiebing's Leather Dye - Chocolate Brown and a bit of Black. The color actually has more red in it than I was expecting. You can see an almost cherry like look to it in the sun. I was going for a darker chocolate brown but it turned out okay. Leather dye doesn't always look the same when you use it on wood. Probably cuz it's "LEATHER" dye. ;D
Anyway I prefer using leather dye because it's easy to work with, affordable, a little goes a long way, it thins with alcohol and dries fast. You have to experiment a little on a test piece sometimes. I also used a coat of Black Walnut Stain (from Minwax). I was having a tough time working the dye into the grain and that did the trick. Finally it's finished with 12 coats of clear gloss wipe on polyurethane. I know not everyone likes "shiny" but I do. So I used it. Put on 10 coats sand with 0000 steal wool. cleaned off ALL the little steal wool particles with compressed air - add 2 more very thin coats.
ErictheViking - thanks dude - uh..yeah now there's an image I can't unsee. >:D HA! No offense Sleek! O:)
Weylin - thanks bro. I really appreciate it!
PD - Thanks dude!
Thanks again everyone!
-
Thanks bro! I have the hardest time getting hickory to take any kind of stain very well. I'm gonna give the leather dyes a try next time around.
-
cool all around,wicked!
-
Fritz - Sure! I think you will like dye - you can also try Rit Dye. I don't use it (not that I have anything against it. I just haven't tried it yet) but I know many other people do.
bushboy - thanks!
