Title: Unknown nock question

Hello,

My wife bought a selfbow at a garage sale. The nocks have a strip of dark material apparently for protection on the back side. The material is varnished and looks like horn, but on one end, the varnish has flaked off and it looks like some kind of black fibrous material. I am thinking about replacing it, but don't know what it is or how to go about it. Anyone familiar with this?

Maybe phenolic.

Could be micarta. Not sure if that is the same thing as phenolic. It is used on some recurves.

It is probably decorative only, so just for appearance sake.

The fibrous material looks and feels like black cotton, and flakes off easily if touched. The bow is probably vintage, no visible grain, so probably lemonwood.
