Title: "Korean" arrow nock
Post by: Grasshopper Mouse on November 12, 2013, 01:52:19 am
I've got a fellow who has ordered a set of bamboo arrows to go along with his Korean bow.
I'm using the Chinese bamboo shafts that most of us have seen but the typical Korean arrow has wood nocks that I've never made before.
I have to say I'm quite pleased with how the first one has turned out. Now all I have to do is finish the next eleven...

You did a nice job on the wood nock but with the grain running lengthwise I think I put a wrap around it to keep it from splitting.

Pat, it may not be easy to see in the picture but the string slot is going across the grain. I've done enough regular self nocks to know that much  ;)
In any case, these will be wrapped with thread as part of the build plan.

Any chance you'd be willing to share some progress pics of the next ones?

Aussie, once I get this order finished I'll be making a blog post to show the whole progress. When I get it done I'll post the link here.

As for progress, I finished the other eleven nocks today. I normally make my self nocks all the same but this time there is some variation from one nock to another. The blanks are from 3R and they have pretty poor quality control, leading to variation in the finished nocks. If I do nocks like these again I'll figure out how to make the blanks myself.
With these nocks I'm trying to reproduce traditional Korean nocks. The arrows will be shot with a thumb ring and I think that's where the bulbous end comes into play.
This is a fun project.

I finally finished these arrows today.
As promised, I did a blog post on their construction:

Lots of pictures so if you have a dial-up connection you have my apologies.

It's easy to keep straight, Buckeye.  You pronounce it with a hard G and a long I, he pronounces it with a hard g and a long I.  Simple, right?

Love the look of those nocks, thinking of ways I can adapt those to wooden shafts rather than cane...got a few ideas.

Apologies for the confusion, Guy.
You'd be surprised at how many "Guy's" I've met over the course of my life. There was even a gentleman with my same first and last name in the general area I lived in a few years ago. Heck, his mother called me one night thinking I was him!

JW, I've seen nocks like this made by sanding the end of the shaft to a "V" and then gluing two pieces of wood onto the sides of the V and shaping the nock from there.
Jeez, that's not easy to describe. Did it make any sense? Avcase makes his flight arrow nocks like this over on PP.

Or...
Lee Valley has this critter: http://www.leevalley.com/US/Wood/page.aspx?p=32280&cat=1,180,42240,53317&ap=1
Drill your nock blank with that for a female side, taper the shaft with a pencil sharpener for the male side, glue them together, shape your nock... Bob's your uncle.

No worries, Guy.
I've been a member of PaleoPlanet since its inception and used to participate here until there were changes a number of years ago that I didn't agree with. Those changes have gone by the wayside and I thought I'd wander back to see what's happening.
As for bringing the name down... just the opposite, I think we should join forces and take over the world!
