What do I absolutely need to have to get started in knapping? I have some obsidian coming my way, but what else?
-
No joke.... just starting out knapping and starting with obsidian... Safety Glasses and band-aids. You will get cut, so expect it. And one obsidian flake in your eye will change your life. Nothing wrong with obsidian, just keep in mind you are starting with the sharpest stuff ever.

This covers pretty much every subject you need to find out about from tools to how to knap. I would also recommend that you go to You Tube and look for the beginner's video from Paleoknapper Jim - sorry, I can't link to videos.

Brad here's a set if indirect tools I made for a buddy. 1/2"- 3/4" oceanspray with various gauges of copper wire jacked and glued into the ends and a pressure flaker, antler mallet They work great!
You'll also need abrading stone and some hammer stones or boppers. Whatever suites your fancy.

Hey Bryce do those work well out of wood? I want to build a similar set.
-
They've been working for me. After awhile the bark flakes off but other than that, work fine as long as the wood is hard enough to take the beating.
-
I need to find some antler. Thanks guys.
