Heres an osage selfbow adorned with copperhead snake skins that was made with the intent to hunt...the osage came from the same dead standing tree that three eyed and two eyed molly came from(and I have one stave left from it)...this stave had a high crown to it,and to maintain width I made the belly concave...everything was done in moderation(IMO),to the subtle induced deflexed handle,to the subtle flipped levers, and a front profile in which the shoulders to the levers are almost unnoticeable...it has very graceful appealing lines any which way you look at it...it turned out 54"ntn...58@26"...13.7 ounces before I applied the oil and handle wraps, which is hemp wrapped with a leather grip stitched over the top...jicarillo tip overlays...1 1/4" resting reflex...and yeah this bow thumps and shoots as good or better than it looks 8) thanks for viewing :D

I like it, Chris. Something about copperskin bows.
-
In archery when things look right they normally are....
And there is nothing wrong about that!
-
thats a beauty. I like the ,atching overlays and the snakeskin, you did a superb job. The bow looks clean to me.
-
Amazing bow BH. She turned out sweet. Looks like you are drawing it with your mouth.
Are you entering it in the BOM?
-
Beautiful! Superb craftsmanship and vision as usual!
Can I shoot it???? :D
-
That bow just sings to me! Great job! :)
-
You gotta love Copper and Gold. I would like to see pics of the concave belly.

-
That's sweet Chris! Another beaut!
-
Thanks for all the super comments, replies, and responses everybody ;)
I don't know Clint? Do you think its good enough for BOM? ??? ::)
-
For a 54" I'am totally impressed. That Osage is wonderfull stuff.
-
Dang
You know buddy, not that I want any of your crap bows, I may shoot that one, in the dark when nobody is watching. ( If somebody sees it, they may steal it )
Honestly Chris, You are very quickly becoming my favorite bowyer. I have some erc set aside that I am waiting to get close to your talents to turn into bows, because they already have the natural Deflex reflex bend you are quickly becoming famous for. I have been tempted for alost a year now to just send them to you to work....
-
Thanks for all the super comments, replies, and responses everybody ;)
I don't know Clint? Do you think its good enough for BOM? ??? ::)
What ever ::) After you pulled out your Big, Osage, spoon you have to post it on BOM. Do you have a subscription? ??? ::) ;)
-
Doesn't get better than that. I love the look of the handle and fades..........
-
Sweet bow Hawkster. Real nice design that looks like a performer and the finish work is outstanding. A lot to like about that bow killer. :)
-
Chris you've got to put that in BOM.
-
Beautiful Hawkman!!!
Looks like it's a fast one.... very nice to look at, very nice !!!
-
The full draw picture looks like your holing the arrow in your mouth. Lol
-
No point in entering it in BOM, it's a little too fancy for most >:D
That's about as perfect as they come. I want one :)
-
The full draw picture looks like your holing the arrow in your mouth. Lol
Why do you need a bow when you can just spit arrows?
All kidding aside, that is an exceptional piece of work, Chris!
-
Another inspiring Bow...... I'm Still waiting on my next two staves to get here to Mexico... And would love to try crank out something similar... i'm thinking i'll be going for a Holmegaard and a Flatbow both around 60#@26" for hunting.......
Would love to get your dimensions for that one and stretch em out a bit to get something close to 66"ntn pulling a similar weight...... How smooth is that bow in terms of quietness and such....
Again compliments on another inspiring piece of functional art...... a true role model to the bow making community.....
What kind of game are you looking to nail with that baby?
-
Wow man that is something else ! really well done ! Nice set of large matching copperhead skins too those aint easy to come across !
-
Man, that's nice. Love them copperheads!
-
That is a stunning bow. Graceful is an understatement!
-
As always Chris - VERY NICE ! Bob
-
Wow... gotta be the prettiest bow I've seen for a loooong time. Love the pic with the Autumn leaves too.
Beautiful...
I don't normally like snake skins (except on snakes ;) ) .... but that's a real beaut'
Del
-
Simply gorgeous! "Nuff said"!
-
Sweet looking lines on that one Chris.Nice execution of a bendy handled molly recurve.Copperheads and osage go together like bacon & eggs.Too bad their so expensive if you don't live in an area that has em.Looks like you had just enough length.
-
Thanks for all the kudos gentlemen...means a lot to me :D
Capt...for your stats I'd go 62" ntn...for starting layout make the fades 1 3/4"+ parallel for 6" then a subtle concave taper to 1" wide towards the start of your levers..then make the levers 3/4"+ wide paralell for starters, and you can reduce em down after you string it and know where your string lies...and make your levers 10" long.....and that's just simple layman's terms..I'm not gonna get into the nitty gritty details here...in terms of smoothness and quiteness these bows are hard to beat in that category if made right...
Seminolewind it came from one big a$$ snake cut in half so no matching required ;)
-
Oh..almost forgot...and for those that want to see the belly I'll try to get some pics up of that later today if I can...I had some serious network problems yesterday trying to post it..so hopefully I don't run into the same issues again today
-
Sweet Blackhawk. Looks deadly!
-
I love it! I been wanting to make that bow to the T and I have the perfect stave for that. Thanks for the inspiration.
-
Thanks slim n Pauly...go for it pal...can't wait to see your version...;)
-
Beautiful bow, love everything about it,and yes I bet it thumps and arrow. :) Looks like a BOM candidate to me. ;) ;D ;D ;D

Looks like a nice bow for hunting !
Chris I need to see the rest of the story !
I may have to go against the flow on the BOM entry !
Good to see ya posting one anyway !!
-
Excellent bow Chris! Smooth and graceful every angle you look at it. That must be why you're blowing it a kiss at full draw. :o
-Dan
-
I've really enjoyed the bows you posted recently. Always get such a smooth curve in your tiller. Nice color match with the tips, handle, and skins on this one too!
-
That my friend, is perfection! It just might be my second favorite Blackhawk bow. I own the my favorite one. ;)
-
Those CH skins touched her right off man. Its amazing what they can do to a bows appearance, love it. GO HUNTING!
-
Beautiful bow, great job.

-

lmao i was like "HEY, I DONT REMEMBER WRITING THAT!!!!"
-
Amazing! Beautiful lines.
-
Beautiful job, I like how you incorporated the molly technology into your tips.
-
lol anyone notice that it looks like the arrow is being held in his lips lol
LOL, I thought that too. I went to a few archery competitions in CA and there was a guy who shot in the compound division who was an amputee. Lost his right arm in an accident, but decided to keep shooting anyway. He had a special tab he gripped with his teeth to draw and release. Helps keep a consistent anchor point anyway, lol.
-
Absolutely gorgeous!
-
That one is a beauty. You make masterpieces all the time. Like it a lot. :-)
lmao i was like "HEY, I DONT REMEMBER WRITING THAT!!!!"
;) (I'm your little brother. I'm 51. ;D

-
Thanks guys....lol on the full draw photo comments... I had several full draw pics to choose from and I picked that one on purpose knowing I'd get some comments on it... ;)
-
heres the best I can show the belly side that was requested...kinda hard to show without seeing it/feeling it in person

-
i'm betting it feels more concave than it looks
-
Great work caulk man!
-
Nice clean work on the dished belly Chris.
-
What tools did you use for the concave belly?
Very cool bow by the way sorry lol.
-
Thanks guys :)
Yeah bub it is...kinda hard to show that thru pics
Dwardo I have several different scrapers with different radius' ,and just scraped and scooped it out as I tillered ;)
-
Very nice Chris! Very nice indeed! Josh
-
Thanks guys :)

Dwardo I have several different scrapers with different radius' ,and just scraped and scooped it out as I tillered ;)
Thanks, I must go scraper shopping,.
-
This might just be top 3 bows I've seen on here this sucker is freakin awesome ! Good job man !
-
Nicely done, Chris! Everything about it is spot on. Is there a structural reason to dish the belly? Does it allow you to reduce limb mass without losing width?
-
Thanks seminolewind..:)
Thanks Adam...the first reason i did it was that I needed to keep the width I needed...if I just made it flat I would've lost too much width IMO because of the high crown....now I know osage can withstand the abuse, but I don't want a overstressed bow...and in doing so I think it does reduce some mass in the limbs....from a "structural support" stand point I honestly can't answer definitively without it being just a "theory"...but i would seem to think it would cause more wood to actually work and relieve a little stress off the top of the high crown...because the wood is now closer to being even thickness from side to side and distributing the stresses across more surface area...anyone else's thoughts on this?
-
Blackhawk - what a beauty! this is just my brainstorm on the structure of the belly, but i am an architect, so i'd like to think that i might be onto something. you've essentially created an arch, which is of course one of the best shapes to carry a compression load, so in theory if you're able to keep the thickness tillered correctly, you could have less material doing more efficient work. the more i think about it, the more it makes a lot of sense to design a bow this way.
-
ACS limb, guys. Patented for laminated bow construction. Google it.
-
.... you've essentially created an arch, which is of course one of the best shapes to carry a compression load, so in theory if you're able to keep the thickness tillered correctly, you could have less material doing more efficient work. ........
Bingo....you said it better than I could...
And yes pat...adcock patented the design for glass and took it to the flats (as I'm sure you know)...I didn't wanna bring glass into the conversation... ::) ....in theory I think it can apply to wood bows, but maybe not every piece of wood due to its idiosyncricies of no two are the same etc etc....
-
Very nice!! Do you know if it flattens or arches more at full draw?
Don
-
I have no clue on that one Don ...Ive thought about that..but don't think I can see it as I'm drawing the bow focusing on the shot rather than the bow....guess I could lightly tack a piece of tape across a have someone watch..if it flattened it would wanna stretch the tape to pull off,and if it did the later it would slacken the tape? Or maybe it doesn't move to any significance at all?
-
Yea, I don't have any ideas about how to do it. A piece of masking tape might work. I just thought that knowing what it did might help understanding what is happening when you draw a bow. I guess if I cut a piece of PVC and bent it, that would tell me the same thing.
-
Thats an interesting question Don. PVC could tell you what the shape "wants" to do (which i suspect it will want to flatten out) however the wood will act a little differently, if you used a wood strong in tension i would think it could resist this, and maybe increase the efficiency. all just gut-reaction theoretical of course...would love someone with more experience to chime in.
-
Super nice as always Chris!
Just theorizing here, but I would think you're losing some compression value with that concave belly design. probably make it easier on it's back/crown as you mentioned. But being Osage, may not make a bit of difference.
Isn't the ACS concaved on the back? That would certainly increase the tension value and make for a faster bow.........Art
-
Way to push the envelope, Chris. Innovation breeds excellence.
-
Thanks Art :) ...you may be right too? And yeah its osage..it don't matter...it can take it,and almost anything ya throw at it ;) ...just another one of the thousand and one reasons why osage is king...lol...I need to write a book called "The thousand and one reasons why osage is king"....lol
Thanks Adam :)
-
Just my observation making bows here is that when I reverse brace bows[belly is very flat] sinewing them the belly gets concave meaning the center is getting stretched, but I don't think there is that much change on the other side of the limb.Concaving your belly reduces weight on your limbs without risking failure and that is the benefit, but like you said a lot of crazy things can be done to osage and it still comes out smelling like a rose. But still maybe this is'nt one of those crazy things.A significant amount of weight would have to be removed to make a diff IMO.
-
Chris, really unique bow. The skins are of course my favorite as I shoot a copperheaded osage. What I like the best about it is the shortness and the molly type tips. Bet its a pretty quick shooter and at that length would fit nicely in a ground blind. My 60" make me have to pay attention to the top limb too much when I'm in blind. Oh and the concave belly is cool too. Danny
-
man that thing just flows!!!!!that dishing technique must have some merit if you're using it and Simpson is done it pretty cool I'm sure we'll see that one in the BOM!!!
-
That is an Awesome bow. Dang.... Very nice.
-
that looks really cool, love the skins. that is a big "punkin" in the pic. I bet this thing really shoots well. I was at camp this season with a friend of mine that just bought a laminated glass bow from a well known bowyer, it was 50# @ 28". the bow you gave me was around 53#, it shot better than his $800 glass bow, he was suprised, and somewhat disappointed in his. you do good work, keep it up.
-
Thanks Danny...you got it..this bow was made to hunt from the ground...;)
Thanks soy and arrowind ;)
Dave you just made my day ...thanks ;D ;D ;D ;)
-
Beutiful bow Blackhawk!! Copperhead skins look very nice!
-
Pure beauty.
-
That one is a beauty. You make masterpieces all the time. Like it a lot. :-)

lol im not even half your age im 24 lol your screen name trips me out, i see you post stuff and i automatically think someone hacked my account, then i notice theres no 53. (49ers linebacker navaro BOWMAN and his number is 53)
Lol. I could have been your father, but relax, I live in Norway ;-) You got a cool nickname. :-)
-
Would you be able to go in to a bit more detail regarding the tillering of the dished belly? Do you only tiller using the curved scraper in the middle, creating more and more of a dish as you tiller? Or do you create the amount of "dish" you want in the beginning and reduce wood from the whole belly, both from the center of the dip and from the sides keeping the shape consistent?
Oh, and awesome bow. :).
-
Heavens to Murgatroyd!!!
This Bow looks like its going a Hundred Miles An Hour, even when it's sitting still.
Blackhawk, your progression with the Molly design is stunning.
You had me at Three Eyed Molly.
But This Bow is Something Else.
I love the way the limbs transition to levers...
And your finish work on this bow gives it an Unreal Quality that is simply Outstanding!
-gus
-
This has to be my favorite bow to date just from a cosmetic standpoint. She sure is purty. What's the odds of it making it to Moontree? I'd like to see it in person.
-
Chris
I still think you can do better !
But I do want to see it in person !!!!
-
bubbles I thought saying I used a radius edged scraper was pretty self explanantory :-\ ... I was just careful to maintain an even sided to side thickness is all...if you scrape long enough with one your belly will eventually turn concave...pretty simple stuff ::) thanks ;)
lol gus.. thanks ;)
greg not sure on that one yet...that's a ways off ??? 8) thanks tho.....ill for sure be at the classic tho ;) cant miss that
Guy I don't know if I can make a better selfbow honestly ??? ....ill try tho ;) ..im sure youll be seeing it next time we see each other
-
Chris
I would rather eat my words, than believe that you won't do a better job !
Find that one strait no fun piece of hedge you have stashed away so the character does not interrupt your thoughts and poor all you have learned so far into it !!
Then I will cast a vote for BOM !
After that you can go back to playing with the fun stuff and I will fade off the scene !
Hope we see each other soon !
-
That is a fine looking bow.
-
Yeah, I was curious if there was anything else involved. its as simple as using a the radius scraper Instead of a flat one! Combined with lots of skill and experience of course. :)
-
yet even more refinement impressive. so beautiful
chuck
-
I missed this one, Nice bow Hawkster. Really like the skin combo and the concave idea. Good work!
-
Guy this did come from a straight clean no fun piece of hedge, and I did pour a lot of my knowledge learned into it...so does that mean you'll go vote then? ;) 8)
That is Gordon...appreciate your comment :)
Yup bubbles..its that simple ;)
Thanks Chuck ;)
Thanks Matt ;)
-
Chris
I think you learned a thing or two on this one that will make the next one even better !
If you had said you put all of it instead of a lot of your knowledge I mite have voted !!!
Sorry buddy maybe next time ! Some one has to push ya might as well be me !
Wish we were not 5 hrs apart ! Since my daughter moved farther south I may not ever be back in your area !
Take care buddy !!!
Guy
-
Well Guy...it looks like I'm retiring from bow making then cus I can't do a better job than that ;) ...n don't tell me she moved to west by god? ??? 8)
-
Like every thing bout that one!she's a beaut!
-
Chris
I ain't buying it !
Yes she did !!
Hope she can bring the Babies back home where they belong !
The worthless old nut !
