I've been meaning to get out to Glass Buttes for a few months now and when I watched Billy's video it gave me the little push I needed.
Now I knew it was going to be cold. 20 deg or so. But I was not counting on the wind!
Either way, I brought my brother along and we spent maybe 30 mins gathering materials the rest of the time we goofed off and watched the coyotes, deer, and pronghorn run around the high desert. While digging in the side of rock face a rattler (too cold to even way his tail) scared the crap out of me and I went on my mary way. We found a lot of rainbow and mahogany obsidian but very few large chunks that were true jet black. In the following morning we ran into a couple guys hunting pronghorn and they pointed us in the direction of some nice large jet black stones.
And we spent 10 mins filling a tote. If you live anywhere near this place, let me tell you it's worth the trip :)
Now it's time to get better at this knapping thing;)

Nice haul. I think your short of your annual haul limit though ;) you should head back and get more, and a picture of the little rattler that ran you off >:D
-
lol the snake wasn't much maybe 10" long. If i had the camera with me I would have taken a picture would of liked to know what kind it was.
-
Agh! I wish I had access to that kind of material though I'm glad I never have to deal with 20 degree temps :D

One of these days! Grrrrr

Wow, Wow, and WOW!!! what a haul, Bryce. Now let's see some points!
-
20 deg isn't all that bad. Personally I prefer it to be colder.
I might throw some up for trade here and there
-
nice haul, I really need to make that run one day. Ed

We only have one species of rattler , the western rattle snake or crotalus viridis. There's two subspecies the northern pacific or crotalus viridis oreganus and the Great Basin or crotalus oreganus lutosus. In that area it was probably the little brown colored northern pacific
