here's a pignut hickory bow i wrapped up the other day. its 60inches, and 80lbs @ 26.
i have been shooting 75ish pounds for a while so i figured i wanted an 80. i am snap shooter so its not so drastic of an increase.
i used a home made black walnut stain for the base coat and gave it a reddish tinge with minwax polyshades "bombay saphire" i really like the color it made. i would say overall, i am very pleased with this bow.
i used some walnut heartwood to make the tip overlays. and the string is 18 strands of b-50, hand twisted (no jig) with self trapped muskrat fur silencers
and for accuracy, it puts 'em where ya point 'em. my first shot, i stepped just out the door and at 20 yards, whacked a paper cup with a judo!

here it is drawn, since i snap shoot i didnt want to attempt holding it full on for fear of injuring myself..lol but its close, i would say i have about 3 more inches until release.

Whew, heavy duty!
Nice work, but don't ask me to draw it. :o
-
Damned nice bow Ryan, little heavy for me too :).
-
Very nice, I like the looks of a smoothbark hickory bow, with the muscled look of the wood. Great result, no set for a heavy bow like that. Did you have a little reflex in it to start with? The first braced shot looks like the inner limbs are a little stiff, but your full draw and the last one looks smoother.
My elbow's hurting just thinking about 80lb draw.
-
Two words: Lateral Epicondylitis ??? :'(
Seriously, nice bow.

thanks guys, it started off with the slightelst amount of reflex but lost that in short order, so i heated the limbs its gave it some reflex but after shooting it in, it all evened out, i suppose i cant complain.
-
Sweeeet ;D. I have a soft spot for heavy hickories ;).
-
I have to wonder if you guys are all on steroids pulling that kind of wieght ;) My shoulder started singing in pain just looking at the pictures ;D
Looks pretty darn good to me, well done and hope ya don't hurt yerself.
-
That's a nice looking bow Ryan. But if you can't hold it at full draw, why not lighten it up some?It will take stress off the limbs and reduce set.You can still shoot it fast. ???
-
very nice bow looks great heaviest bow ive made was 75# i think. first time i went to shoot i could only get about a dozen arrows and i was pooped! ;D the more i shot it the better i liked it and ended up using it this fall for turkey and deer. again sweet bow! -whitewood

thanks guys,
mullet: i have many bows in the 50- 65 lb range, but this is the only one over 75lbs so i think i would rather keep it this way to shot stone from. i only snap shoot, regardless of weight so the extraweight inst a big deal as far as shooting is concerned, but holding it 5 seconds for a picture is a whole nother story..lol its certainly not a target bow. a doz arrows a day is just fine till i work up to more.thats how i got to shoot 70 lbs, slow and steady, now i can do it all day, its kinda a goal. :)
-
It is a great looking bow. I think I would stay with the lighter weights too. If you are fighting it that hard you are probably loosing draw length and performance. I would rather see a guy shoot a 60# bow that he can comfortably get to full draw every time than a 80# that he cant. Not only will his accuracy be better, he will probably get better arrow speed. tendinitis for short, exelent power bow

Nice bow and straight when unstrung for the heavy weight. When are you headed to Africa to hunt elephant, cape buffalo, etc.? ;D
-
Turned out well. Very nice
-
Nice bow Ryan, really good looking tiller and the stain job looks great.

Groan! 80#! Is this where you got your name "twistedlimbs"? :P
Got your killer bow set up for December Self Bow of the Month. Thanks for the post.
Want to post another full draw a little closer to the camera and crank it back another inch or so? ;)
-
I know how it is trying to coordinate for a full-draw shot. The wife and I have it timed about right now with her little digi-cam, I say "now" right as I start to pull and usually it goes off about the time I hit full draw.
-
What are the dimensions?
-
Tom Sawyer, has got it right, its the coordination between me and the picture taker, my digital camera has a delay. so i opted to just hold it this time around. which resulted in a slightly less than full draw.
i didnt mean this to sound like i couldnt handle the bow, i can shoot it fine, i have spend the last several years working up slowly in weight. but the muscle "twitch" that it takes to snap shoot is different than what it is to hold anchor, i am not suited to holding anchor anymore than about 60 lbs.
i guess this is more of a novilty item for me to have a heavy bow. i have 15- 20 others that range from 45-75lbs. just somthin different
thanks all- Ryan
-
That is real sweet bow Ryan. I also snap shoot, after several years of shooting like this my brain is programmed to not hold at full draw. I have a heck of a time cranking it back for pics, just doesn't feel right. But I am trying to hold for a second now so I make sure I am anchored correctly,

the dimensions are 60.5 ntn. 1 3\4 wide tapers to 1\2inch and the limbs are just over 5\8 thick tapering to just over 3\8 thick about 4 inches before the tips.
-
hey OLDBOW, i got somethin for ya ;) :P ;D
any better?lol
