Well another post on here has inspired me to convert my old popup into a teardrop camper my tent is all sun rotten and they want 1800$ for a new tent :'(. I just cant justify buying a new tent and 12 years down the road il have to replace it again for even more money. So a teardrop conversion seems to be more economical i wont have to replace a tent ever again :). So the first thing that needs to be done is to demolish this popup. I plan to reuse as much of the interior like stove, sink ect..... And salvage all the popup parts to resale or trade to someone that can use them no need to let good things go to waste. I only have mornings before work and weekends to work on it so itl prolly take a month or two to finish 8) time for pics

-
This mornigs progress its tearing down really fast now. Thos storm in the gulf will prolly bring lots of rain tomarrow soni move the trailer into the shop so i can keep workong on it i still have the floor amd the raising mechanism to remove

Next step is to remover the tanks and raising mechanism
-
looks like more time or energy than I have to do something like that!
-
It is a long process but i have a new axle under this trailer that i dont want to go to wast because the tent went bad and the wood is rotting after 17 years of use
-
Well work was rained out so i made use if my time to finish striping the trailer :) i pulled the rest if the trash and popup mechanisms off and pressure washed it inThe rain next step after it dries is to move tha axle a little futher back to compesate for the shift of the weight of the galley

Cool thread. I look forward to following your progress.
-Dan

This mornings progress consisted of preparing the trailer for moving the axle further back since teardrops with chuck boxes in The rear are rear heavy

And this is the general area the axle will be moved to
(http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/ee451/bloodmoonwidow/5853AFC7-EF96-4A8B-B14D-3FE6C12C90C0-3410-0000020DE1CB5AFF_zps0b2c459d.jpg)
-
Hopefully by fri il have it moved and ready to re paint
-
This evenings progress, i managed to move the axle back i think it turned out well i found some mounts in the shop and managed to gain an inch by modifying them its been awhile since i have welded first pass with 6010 rods and second with 8018 rods :)

The next step is to scrounge up some square tubing and lift the axle some more so itl have the proper clearance for pulling down the road and not have tires rubbing
-
Um. I know it's kinda late to mention it. And maybe I shouldn't. But I will. >:D
Wouldn't it have been easier to just weld up a frame from scratch? On the other hand, would you have had as much fun?
-
Haha well.... :o this is cheaper its already made :P 8)
-
Looking pretty Good... :)
-gus
-
Wow,
Thats quite an undertaking.
But i guess if someone enjoys doing it,then its pure fun.
-
Next i need to scrounge up some rectangular tubing so i can lift the axle some more so itl have proper clearance while traveling
-
Very cool thread!! 8)
-
Hopefully you will get to see it patrick i plan to take it to the classic next year ;)
-
Very cool thread,I use to love doing that kind of stuff, now I love watching someone else do it. ;) :)
Pappy
-
Hopefully you will get to see it patrick i plan to take it to the classic next year ;)
You gonna draw a crowd if you do that. Next thing you know it's gonna be a cottage industry just providing teardrops for them! Then someone is gonna want waterbuffalo horn accents and snakeskins on it.
-
Haha right!!!!!
-
I like what you've done so far...
But might I suggest one small design change?

I like it Gus!! But Sterling make it hop!!
Cipriano

Enjoying this thread too...always thought a tear drop would be cool...and still do.
Just not ready to build one. But I like watching someone else work!! ;)
-
I like mine, but I bought it. I'm getting like Pappy.
-
'' Make it hop" your killing me ;D :D Sterling,Im getting the itch to tear into my trailer cool thread

Not much progress this morning just mainly planning the modification of the blocks on where the holes will go

This mornings progress went well i drilled the holes and welded the blocks :) all i need now is to go buy some longer U-bolts

-
Are you gonna have to change the setup on your Outriggers/Stabilizers?
Or are they long enough as is?
-gus
-
Il either have to get taller blocks for under the stabilizers or just weld an extention
-
Todays progress was finishing up mounting the axle with the new U-bolts and i washed the welds on a plate off an old tailgate and used it for a fender top plate/ blowout protection we flipped it back over and hopefully prep it for painting next week and mount the floor :)

That little rat rod trailer don't bother me a bit. I wonder if that steel roof is water tight? JeffW

Thats what i was thinking
-
Thats a cool little rig right there! ... Think i got a plan for my old boat trailer & salvaged barn wood. ;)
-
That little rat rod trailer don't bother me a bit. I wonder if that steel roof is water tight? JeffW
You know Jeffy, I look at the rest of the workmanship of that teardrop and find it hard to believe the builder would fail on that one little (but oh so important) point. If you and I could get a look at that thing for just about half a minute I bet we'd find out that the corrugated tin is a cosmetic layer over something else that keep's her water tight! You want one like it as bad as I do, doncha?
-
Dang Jay_Dub!!! I didn't think of that? and yes I do want one I started to gather stuff to start one though,,,, but if you ever look up "The Bog" at Watkins Glen Intl race track and check out the "Geneva Horny Heathens" you'll see the crowd I hang with and would have to chain that to a pole before I went to sleep. BTW I know nothing 'bout burning that bus!!!!! JeffW

Actually, that looks like my little Guys trailer with Rustic camo over it.
-
Cool thread!! There was a teardrop for sale a city over from me and I lusted after if for awhile but never pulled the trigger. Probably should have. Would be nice out at the deer lease. Anyway, it's fun to watch you modding this thing up.

Here's mine. I really like it. When I bought it they also offered a Retro model that was flat black and had white wall tires and Baby Moon hubcaps.

Oh boy, a Retro version? I could see that getting chopped and dropped, doorhandles shaved off, de-chromed, windows tinted, going all classic Lead Sled and towed by a '51 Merc!
-
Nice Eddie, I really need one of those.
George

This weeks goal is to re paint the trailer and hopefully mount the floor :)

I extended the jack this morning and grinded all the rough spots on the trailer

Looking good...this thread inspired my wife and me to stop and look at tear drops at a trailers sales lot. $8000- $11000 for a new one!! We like them but not sure they are for us. My wife likes them because she thinks we would travel more!!
Keep up the good work and keep posting!!

This is where the progress is going to slow down. So far i managed to find the A/C for the camper at the pawn shop the had it listed for 24$ and the sed it wasnt working right so i plugged it in and turned it on and all it did was hum so i turned it off grabbed my knife and stuck it through the vent slot and pushed on the fan blade. Just as i thought it was froze up from just sitting i gave it a good push and it broke free ;) and what do you know it went to working like it was new blowing clold air :) i talked them down to 20$ and walked out the door

And this evening i finally got time to start drawing my blueprints of the interier this is what i have so far and its all subject to change

I went with a flatter front to allow us to use the front wall and a back rest for sitting ;) the A/C will have a drip pan with drain

Ohh and i have not done the interiors storage yet i have not decided where i want it and if i want to incorporate a small removable bunkbed for sully since he is the youngest of my three kids the others can sleep in tents ;)
-
Progress has slowed down alot we have had tow heavy bill weeks so hopefully next week i can get the wood for the floor :)
-
I don't know if you've specified what your going to use for wood on here or not, I just check in periodically and look at the pics. I have used luan(sp?) on most of the floors in our house and it works and looks good. I used the birch luan...LU...AHN in most of the house, but used the oak in our bedroom and it looks great. Hillbilly wood floor. Sealed in semigloss poly. Might check it out for your floor. Nice job so far. my 2 cents, dp

Still chugging along i found some time to make the bumper and drill the holes for mounting i plan to order the led tail light and license plate lite next week along with picking up tue wood for the floor :)

Sorrybi have not posted latlty iv been busy with work and family but soon il post some more pics :)
-
Now that the holidays are over its time to get back at this camper i need to have it finished before the calssic :)
-
Almost forgot about this one! Wondered what happened. Can't wait to see her finished!
-
Cool project! I have been thinking of making one of those for quite some time, but I don't have a trailer frame yet. Might have to buy, and beef up a Harbor Freight trailer frame.
I like the one Eddie has. But oh boy are they ever expensive! I think for the money, I would go with a small used airstream.
I have seen some other nice little campers, but man even they are expensive! I have some ideas for the one I want to build. But for now it is just another want to do thing on the long list.
Yours looks like it will be a big one when finished. But if you have kids, I guess it will be needed! ;) Keep the pictures on the progress coming. The tear drop trailers, are really neat, and there is a club for them. I have seen pictures of some of the original ones, and they were really neat, with all kinds of room, and accessories! And a lot of the original ones are still on the road, giving great travel adventures. Good luck, and keep us updated.
