Title: Identity crisis
Post by: Olanigw (Pekane) on September 10, 2013, 10:34:17 pm
I just learned from my language teacher that "Pekane" comes from a dialect completely absent from  my particular Abenaki heritage and hasn't been used...ever...

Do I keep the name or go with the more appropriate  "Olanigw"?  On the one hand, it's not like I've built up any brand recognition, but I'd hate to confuse things.

Can you say for sure that no one from your Abenaki background didn't inter-marry with someone from the other background?

There are quite a number of Irish with Spanish surnames dating back several centuries.  Happens in all kinds of cultures, I can't imagine that that the Abenaki were mad for racial purity.

Well JW, the family name is Obomsawin.  Goes way way back and has folks from all over the Northeast and Canada mixed in over the centuries with blue eyes popping up by the 1800's.  I have irrefutable proof that there was intermarriage with all the local nations as well as the french and english.  The issue is more,  Martes pennanti has special meaning for me, and I've been putting "Pekane" forward as the correct term for the Fisher in the language, which it isn't.  I hate to be wrong.  I hate more to spread bad information.

Seabass, you raise a good point.

Sleeping on it.

Some people here have switched their handle and it's worked out fine.  No big deal.

As for me, people call me Pat, Patrick, Jack, Mr. Crafty, Mr. Hobbit, and Allergic.  A couple of smarta$$es have called me things like "Benadryl Midget" and "What are you an ex-con or something?".  ???

I gave up on trying to stick to one correct name.  Besides, why not have fun with it?  >:D

I am that I am. I is what I is.

An oversized fluffy weasel by any name still eats household pets and chuckles.

Patrick... And his name was Bilbo.. Bilbo Baggins.  The bravest little hobbit in all the shire.

Really?  Well, I took it down because I tend to goof around too much.  It's not proper behavior for a moderator.   O:)
