This is the third knife i have made. I got the file from the thrift store for 99 cents, annealed it in a blazing hot camp fire and just left it in the coals to cool down slowly, did the profile on a grinder, shaped the blade with a grinding disk and a drill press with the bed set at an angle, heat treated and did the scales. The scales are scrap osage. Nothing real pretty about this knife, the blade has scratches but i think it kind of matches with the file marks still on there. I kind of like the utilitarian, straight handled knife. This will last a lifetime.

Nice knife! As a bowyer you can never waste Osage :) I'm currently working on my first knife. It is also from a Nicholson file! Did you do some kind of finish on the blade to prevent rust? I'm looking forward to posting pics when it's done!
-
No i didn't blue it or anything to prevent rust, I'll just have to use it a lot :)
-
Very cool. I've never seen that type of set up for grinding the bevel before. I've been using my belt sander.
-
Gopher, sounds like a good idea to me:)

I never had either till i thought of it, i think it worked pretty good, the only problem is that curve of the grinding wheel makes a bevel that extends back towards the handle, next time i would stop short and finish the back of the bevel by hand.
