SO I had an idea for a folding pack frame that doubles as a tent rig.
And that popped up the question - would it be better to carry a leather tarp with it, or a nylon one?
I imagine that the nylon would be far thinner and lighter - but far less durable.
Theres also the matter of what would be better to collect water with and which would hold up better next to or even over a fire.
Anyone know more about this kinda stuff?

When packing, lighter is better, and when it starts wearing out, buy another. Its cheap enough. i couldnt imagine packing a leather tarp, wow that would be heavy. Great idea though, wish I had thought of it.

waterproof canvas ....u can use it to collect water make a Adirondack + it is lighter than leather

X2 on the canvas ! Bob

A leather tarp would be an anchor once it was wet, and it would stay wet for a long time.

even dry a leather tarp will be a lot heavyer and if exposed to heat, say indirect heat from a fire will eventually get hard in the exposed areas

Things I'm glad I have you all around to learn from.
Gonna have to find a place to find canvas now though.
