Title: Anyone remember sending me this stave?
Post by: JW_Halverson on August 30, 2013, 11:51:46 pm
I can't remember where it came from or what kind of wood it may be.  The bark is very thin and tight, the inner bark is very stringy and clings tight to the sapwood underneath.  Does not appear to have heartwood, but then it wasn't all that old when it was cut.  The split was perfectly centered and the pith runs the whole length of the 57" stave.  Ends look to be sealed with school glue(?)

Looks like hickory, John.  I didn't send it to you.  ;)

Certainly not me, but that looks like a very nice hickory stave!

If it is hickory, that would be great.  It's destined to be a bend in the handle eastern woodland style with antelope rawhide backing.  It will have a bit of a crown...unless I feel like decrowning it a little.  With this dry climate, this ought to make a decent bow*!

*If I stay out of the way and take my time!

John, don't worry about the high crown but do make the belly flat, flat, flat!  ;)

Yep Clint is right, can from me after Clint traded me for it and wanted me to send it to you. Cut it spring of 2012 so it should be dry by now. Its hickory for sure. This particular stuff is like steel in tension from my experience, but the rings are real thin, so a backing may be a good idea. Hope it works for you.

Backing is on the table for sure because I nicked the center of the stave right at the top of the crown.

The kid that is going to receive the bow is a bit of a primitive artist, the rawhide will give him a nice canvas for his artwork.  The hickory will give him something that will last and be ready to hunt if that chance comes up.

Thanks, Ifrit and OO.  I am liking this piece of wood the more I look at it.

JW if I remember right Mike Yancey paints it then puts the rawhide on for a more primitive look, of course that was probably a sinew backed bow and if ya need it for protection it will have to go on earlier than that

Yup, Yancey paints, then 'hides.  His hides are exceptionally clear, too.  He knows how to make a decent bow, that Mike Yancey does.
