Title: sinew backed juniper homie reworked
Post by: juniper junkie on August 29, 2013, 11:41:06 pm
I made this bow 4 years ago and hunted with it and got my first primitive deer. after the years of hunting the snakeskins were looking a little tattered and I felt that the bow was overbuilt. i removed the skins and reduced the wood to 55# from 65#, i then added a partial layer of sinew down the spine of the bow, after a couple weeks I added some sturgeon skins that a good friend gave me...or at least I thought he gave them to me... >:D thanks Keenan, one was a juvenile and didnt have the scales fully developed. after another couple of weeks the bow returned to 65# so I removed more wood and settled on 60#. the bow is much more efficient and speed has increase dramaticly. the bow is juniper backed with sinew and sturgeon, 64" ntn, limbs are 2" wide until 11" then taper quickly to finish at 7/16" at tips which are horn overlayed. on the levers I used rattlesnake skin, and wrapped the joining with thread soaked with C/A glue,I used left over skin from the juvenile sturgeon for the handle and added leather on the strikeplate, 60#@28" finished the bow off with 6 coats of spray on poly to waterproof it. will be hunting elk this weekend with her.

Wow Impressive !! The fact that it has no string follow shows that juniper is top notch bow wood

sweet looking bow.  Good luck on your hunts.  What glue did you use for the sturgeon skins?  I've heard they can be hard to get to stick.

I remember that bow and I like what you did with it. I hope you kill an elk with it this season.

thanks for the kind words all. Gaur- I used tb2 to glue the sinew and skins on, the bow had two heavy coarses of sinew originally, I have shot hundreds of arrows through this bow with no string follow. Gordon, this bow was my backup at our hunt, remember it got soaked in the tube I packed it in, had rainwater in the foam, never had a issue with sinew lifting. good luck on your hunt this next week, looking forward to some pics.

the wood in this bow is a "mottled" juniper. the tree that was growing was split, this half fell away and wos continuing to grow, but was having a rough time, so the wood was slowly dying, as a result, the wood has heartwood and sapwood mixed throughout, with a thin layer of sapwood on the outside. I left about 1/4" 0r less of the sapwood on the back.  the lettering on the top limb says "choot em". and on the bottom limb says: "vision quest" as this is my attempt to harvest a trophy quality animal with all primitive tackle. although any game taken this way is special, I would like to get a large mule deer buck or bull elk with all primitive tackle. dont know how many years I have left to hunt so I am trying to get my opus. soon, all I will have are memories, but what a fantastic trip this has been. :)
