Curious to see which bow people are choosing to hunt with this year. Lets just keep it to "natural material" bows since we're in the bow forum. I'm going elk hunting in the Oregon coast range this year. This will be my first time bow hunting (I grew up gun hunting white-tails in Wisconsin) so I'm pretty stoked. At first I decided to use my 64# yew longbow but after a few weeks of steady practice with it I decided that it was a little too heavy for me to achieve the accuracy that I want. It has a ton of power but that wont do me much good if I don't hit where I'm looking so I decided to go with my 55# hickory pyramid. It was the first bow I ever made but I love how it shoots and I feel the most accurate with it of all my bows. Here it is.

So, lets see what you're going to hunt with. 8)

I can't. I don't think I've made it yet.
-
I'm hunting with a sinew backed yew bow. I killed a bull with it last year and am hoping lightening will strike again in a few weeks.

Until I get some arrows spines for my two new bows.
-
I have it narrowed down to three. I'll probably use the two on the right the most since I'm hitting better with them. The one on the far right I call Grilled Cheese. Pearly made it for me. The middle bow is one I just finished last week. I haven't posted it yet. I still need to dull it up a little before deer season

I think I am better off to stick with The Kestrel, built by the amazing Minnesota Soy Boy. I've been shooting that bow to the exclusion of all others and it's too late to start looking into something else. I got good arrow flight, it's comfortable in the hand, and even the heavy arrows I am using fly pretty dang fast, so it should do the job. Plus, it's short and bendy thru the handle...perfect for close quarters, the only way I have a chance of hitting much!

Since the best bow I own it the one Gun Doc gave me it will be the Seneca bow.

I was really tempted to hunt with my Gun Doc trade bow from last year. http://www.primitivearcher.com/smf/index.php/topic,33345.msg439926.html#msg439926
It's a super sweet bow I just didn't spend enough time with it to get used to shooting such a short bow. I plan to put some time into it this year so maybe next year it will taste some blood.
-
I'll be hunting with my super secret yew flatbow. Yet to be revield ;)
-
My new Echo Archery screamer and some 650 grn. sticks made by Bryce. They did all the work--all I have to do is find an animal and shoot it :-X
-
Steve I think me and Carson switched rolls on that setup. Since he's the arrow wizard and all. But man he builds a fast bow!
-
I'll be hunting with a bow James Parker recently made me called High Country a bow that similar to the one he made you Pinecone. He used some Japanese bamboo and yew I sent him as well as ipe and osage. The tips are also albino water buffalo I sent him. Grip is ostrich and fits me real nice. It is about 57# @ 28". He said these were the narrowest tips he has put on a bamboo bow. Shoots great. Heading out to the high country of the San Juan Mountains, Colorado with her soon for 2 weeks chasing elk.

the 59# hhb that pearlie made for me, it's accurate and fast, bub (http://i623.photobucket.com/albums/tt320/bubncheryl/101_4184_zps45df4403.jpg) (http://s623.photobucket.com/user/bubncheryl/media/101_4184_zps45df4403.jpg.html)

I will be hunting my Okie trade bow this year. I will be shooting 600gn arrows.
-
Made this one back in the 90's, she's been a faithful companion for years and I hope to introduce her to a Colorado elk in a couple of weeks.

You guys are too flattering, bub and Clint.
Im undecided yet. I have so many damn fine bows that have been given to me I don't know what to do. I doubt it will be with one of my own. Matter of fact the only thing of my own will be the arrows I make, of which the raw materials and points were gifted as well. Whatever I choose, It will be an effort from all my friends. That I do know!
-
Sweet set-ups, guys. Good luck to everyone. I'm off in a few hours to do some early season elk hunting.
-
Knock em' dead Weylin, stay safe.
-
Good luck Weylin. Pursuing elk with a primitive bow will be a hunting experience totally different from any you have had before. Enjoy the journey...

But there's not better seeing that animal down knowing "hey! A full freezer!"

Here is my meat rig for the season.
-
Well, I don't really hunt. but if I did I would use my #55ish longbow.
-
50# 24 vine maple 2 years old and still shootin good, just a plain jane shorty(http://i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh590/barefootbowhunter/DSCF2767_zps10963623.jpg) (http://s1253.photobucket.com/user/barefootbowhunter/media/DSCF2767_zps10963623.jpg.html)(http://i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh590/barefootbowhunter/DSCF3511_zps4e7bebdf.jpg) (http://s1253.photobucket.com/user/barefootbowhunter/media/DSCF3511_zps4e7bebdf.jpg.html)

The wet footprint next to the bow was a nice touch!
I also like the low key camo effect you get from the plaid shirt. If that photo was turned to black and white everyone would be amazed at how well your pattern gets broken up with simple plaid. So long as you don't use any detergent with colorfast bleach (UV brighteners! GACK!) you are plenty good to go!

Finally! Someone else that sees the benefit of hunting barefoot!
-
Nobody believes me, but this is Crazy Jane, and she graduates from carpet and mattress this year if I have anything to say about it!

I love hunting barefoot, only thing that stops me from it are non native blackberrys, stingin nettle, and the cold. critters have a slim chance of hearin me when im huntin barefoot

some nice bows here. i wish it was legal to bow hunt over here. everything good is illegal in the uk :-[

This year I'm gonna hunt with a very special bow that was given to me a week ago by Cody, (misslemaster).
D/R Osage 56"ntn & 50# @ 26", super smooth drawing, whisper quiet release and perfect arrow flight.
Thanks again Cody, this bow is PERFECT my friend.
-
I usually end up huntin with 4 or 5 different bows throughout the year but I plan on stickin with my bubby bow this year till it makes meat. Got some poplar arrows in the works for it.

Man, you guys hunt with some pretty bows. This one is hickory, 67 nock to nock, with a vegetable twine handle, pulling 60lbs @ 28". It's a little longer than my hunting bow from last year, but flings a heavy arrow so straight and quiet, it gets the nod over the rest of my bows. I do have a 58" cousin to it on stand by for ground blinds.
-
57#, 63" ntn osage selfbow. I hope to put meat on the table with it this fall.

I was planning on using "bonne medecine 2" ( a fine scalloped bow halfeye made me) to go round V with "the old girl". However, much to my disappointment I found her rotting carcass down by the creek the last time I was home. I guess blue tongue got her. Whatever done that smart ol doe in, it wasn't me. I freely admit defeat to a very worthy adversary.
So this leaves me in a conundrum, I don't know which bow to hunt with now. I have it narrowed down to three bows. My turtle bow, which is anything but slow. Ol' patch, a fine hhb takedown Soy made me. Last but definitely not least, my pinecone bow. I just can't decide! Josh
-
Love that "Robin Hood in a baseball cap" shot Doc ;)
Some fine looking hunting bows for sure! I'm still tryna figure out if ima be able to get out there this season. Everything is still kinda up in the air :-\
If'n I do, it'll be my trade bow rps3 sent me ;D

Barefoot is the way. Barefeet can be silent and virtually all shoes are bad for your biomechanics anyway.
This year i'll be doing some persistance hunting. As in running after a deer until it's body temperature rises enough to make it stop. So no bow to show.... ;)
-
Some great looking bows on this thread. ;D
