I just wanted to see if there was any interest in a knife in the hat trade.
-
i'd be game
depending on the allotted time
this is the busy time of the year for me with kids in high school sports ,workin a full time job ,huntin and whatever other projects I have on the bench
Kevin
-
I was thinking of leaving this up for a couple of weeks and draw the names then. Was thinking of setting the shipping date for one month after that because i know people are busy and some are on vacation and others are getting ready to go. This is open to steel and stone knives. Make the blade yourself. When you send the pm with your address, include if you want right or left handed.
-
I'd like to, but it's hunting season down here and I'm going to Israel and Spain for work.
-
I would be in also but like above, we would need some time. I work 12 hour days almost every day and often weekends as well. Add hunting season to that and it comes down to I would need some time.
-
I'm in, being a custom knifemaker anyways I'll just make one in between custom orders no problem, if you come up with an odd number of guys or for some reason need another knife I'd be happy to help out. also every one that enters in should specify weather they want a left or right handed sheath.
p.s. i'd prefer a left handed sheath
p.p.s. i'll be gone all of next week so if you p.m me you won't get an answer till next saterday night at the earliest (i'll home all day sunday though)
-
i'd like in if the deadline was extended some
-
I would be up for it
-
I received a couple blades from Killer duck....Top notch!!! ;)
-
My name is Frosty and I am interested in joining in on KITH. I have been making knives as a hobby for 72 years.
How do I correspond with other members on here? Can I get anybody's address and/or phone number? Thanks. Nice to be a part of the group.
-
How much more time is needed to get more to join in? Shipping date of October 12th work for ya? Frost, once the sign up period is complete, you can send me a personal message on here, or email me with your name and address. I will have an impartial party draw the names and then a personal message will be sent to each person with the name that they drew. Then we just set back and wait for the package to arrive. Then you can take a picture and post it on here so that everybody can see what you got. If posting the picture is a problem, just email it to me and I will post it for you.
-
Oct. 12 works for me, i'm in, bub

You sure do make a sweet knife.
-
I roughed out a blade today, and polished a leg bone its aging in coffe grounds now. I have some barrel brown left over from last flinter build for the blade. I hope somebody likes a F/I trade knife or roach belly!
-
wildman whoever gets it if they don't like it they can send it to me it would go good with my F&I outfit.
-
Question for you KH. How are you forging in that bevel for the edge? What are you using to allow you to hammer a consistent angle?
-
sleek
no special tools.
just a couple hammers that I like to use for dropping the edge and bevel work
I try to keep the hammer strokes even from one side to the other and practice ,practice, practice
Kevin
-
Howdy Y'all,
Is it too late to get into the KITH this go round?
-gus
-
no it isnt. I will update the list and put your name on it this evening
-
Fired up the ole bow scrap burning forge today. Sittin by its fire taking a break as a mater of fact letting coals settle. Holy carp my 5 lb hammer is heavy! I haven't used it in so long! Anyways, just making some knife forms. I reall don't know what to make for my person because I don't know who he is. I guess this is luck of the draw. So we will see what gets made and how it turns out. Pics up soon.
-
started on mine yesterday hope to get some more work done on it this afternoon along with a couple others.
-
Here is mine so far. I have been making mostly Mid 1700s style lately trying to get that era down. The kinfe is a generic copy of that period. It has deer leg bone handle aged in coffee grounds double pin trade style blade, pinned with soft steel and then wrapped and sewn with wet rawhide to pull it all tight. The blade is a circular saw blank I aged for effect it was double oil quenched and then treated with plum brown. I will make a sheath from brain tan. I hope you guys like it. If this would not be good for some please comment and I can whip something up a little more up to date
Thanks for looking
Keith
-
I'm not a knife maker, but love it! Would go good with my flintlock
DBar
-
Hey man, looks good to me. Mine will be made from a piece of spring steel from an old horse drawn wagon. I know I want the knife to be usable as possiable. Reckon most here hunt with a bow, so they need to clear a shooting lane. The knife will be a chopper. Also good for quartering up an animal, so will not be a hard point but rather roll it up towards the spine, which allows for skinning and gutting without poking a gut sack or a hole in the hide, or yourself even. For chopping power and lite weight, will have more mass up forward and less to the handle. Pobably going to magnatize it also to point north when hung from a string.
-
Well at this point I have a few Damascus blades that I got in trade over the past few years. One a Bowie, a smaller skinner with a welded on tang and a wide skinner.
I also have a few high carbon blades received in trade that I might go with.
Which ever way it goes, it will be meant to be used... :)
-gus
-
The names have been drawn. For all that have not started yet, Let the sparks fly. The man on top sends to the one under him, and the #2 man sends to #3 and so on. Last man on the list sends to the one at the top.
KHalverson
Parnell
killir duck
Gus
Frost28
Trapper Rob
bubby
bryan irwin
Cardboard_Duck

Everybody PM the one you are sending to for their address and sheath side preference. Gus, I will PM Frost28's address to you and will email Trapper Robs address to Frost.

French's brown spicy mustard :) took about 15 minutes to do that!
-
Some scrimshaw on the handle.
-
How do you use the mustard to patina the blade.
-
How do you use the mustard to patina the blade.
It works best with high carbon, you just put a thin layer on and make some marks with a brush or a toothpick. The areas with the thinnest mustard get darker. I just leave it on until it dries and wash it off.
-
Now that looks great! Looking forward to burrying it into the belly of some critter unlucky enough to be my lunch :)
-
I'm no expert, but I've got a start.
-
here is what I have done so far.
I have had this floating around in my head for quite some time.
my interpretation of a scalping knife
I hope parnell approves

That's a Sweet looking Blade Kevin!
That is a Fine looking Knife Cardboard_Duck.
I like your Sheath Work as well!
-gus
-
Jut got my knife in today and man, its nice. I will be taking it hunting with me. I took it to work today to show off to the fellas. They were also impressed. I like the way it fits my hand and am lookin forward to stickin it into some unlucky critter. I also like your stitchwork on the sheath. I will probably do it on my next sheath, if i can figure out how you did it. Thanks Duck man, it will be a life time companion.
I hope to get more work done on my trade knife soon.
-
I'm glad you like it :) I was kind of worried if you would like the handle or not, it's jute lightly soaked with CA glue.
I did the stitching with one of those awl's with the spool in the handle and just followed the instructions ;)
If you have any problems with it let me know and I can make another ;D
-
I highly doubt I will have any problems. the sheath is a good fit and well stitched. Thanks again bud, heck of a job :)
-
well finially got my trade blade about done all she needs is a few more coats of tru-oil and a sheath, it's about 7 1/2 long, full grind, blacksmith's finish, aged elm burl handles and brass pins.
-
Wow Sir!
That's a Beauty!
:)
-gus
-
After talking with Mr. Frosty, I decided to go with a pretty little Damascus drop point skinner.
Got the blade in trade five or six years back.
Trying for a complex scale layout, Desert Ironwood and German Silver, with German Silver pins.
With Turquoise accents.
Just about have everything cut out and mated.
Hoping to get her finished by Sunday.
-gus
-
Mine is moving along but am humbled by the quality you guys are putting out. It'll be a good knife and I do better with my leatherwork.
Keep you all posted.
When is the trade date?
-
Oct. 12
-
Got it.
-
Whew!
I was thinking the due date was tomorrow... :o
October 12th it much better...
-gus
-
yeah I saw knifes getting finished and went back and checked
-
Had me wondering also been making hay & started chopping corn thought better get my butt in gear.
-
Hey wildman, when you pick up a knife, what are you generally doing with it? Carving bows, whittling smaller things, fishing hunting?I just want to make sure what you get is something useful.
-
I've got mine ruffed out, got to start the bevel on it and figure out what to make the handle out of, antler or wood, maybe cholla
-
Sleek ,I will be happy with whatever. If I had to choose I do not have a heavy chopper.
-
Howdy Y'all,
I've made great progress on the Damascus Skinner this weekend.
Should be finishing it up later tonight or tomorrow.
I'll post some photos shortly there after.
This holds the potential to be my best yet.
I've learned a Lot on this build.
And I have been shown that I still have much to learn.
I would Love to sit with a Bladesmith one day to learn how to improve my process. :)
I'll start on the sheath next week.
-gus
-
Well, here are two blades I am working on at the same time. I cant decide which one to send. Both have their pros and cons. Maybe some feed back would help me decide?
The one on the left is more narrow spined as it was forged from stock into that shape from 1095. The one on the right is mostly stock removal from an old wagon leaf spring that sparks like crazy on the grinder.
Any opinions? Both these knives are to be heavy duty choppers for doing all bow making duties, from chopping down sapling staves with the heave curved forward section, using as a draw knife ( the fat flat front on the knife gives a nice hand hold with little to no actual point hitting your palm ), and scraping with the long flat inner blade. The transition between fat outter blade and thinner inner blade is great for rounding corners or bows as well. Also I hope the spines allow a batton to be used for splitting wood.
To come up with these I went with a small modified machete design on the left and crossed a machete and a K-Bar knife on the right to make what I hope to be the ultimate bow making knife. This is important to me because I love making bows start to finish with just a knife. Thoughts please?

-gus
-
fancy, sweet looker fer sure Gus
-
Wow! I just finally read through this whole thread and saw the drawing list! Kevin, I can't wait to see that knife in person...it's incredible.
I don't have a lot of knife experience, this is my first one made from a blade I cut out myself. It's from some interesting steel that I got from a family member that works at a factory manufacturing various parts for military contracts and firearms. It's a bandsaw blade that is used to cut aluminum and titanium. It's stainless, I gather from being in my garage. I don't know that much about steel and have found I've enjoyed this project...a lot. I think I may be heading into another hobby, here.
Here's what I've got, so far. Got a couple more things to do but it's about there. Not fancy like so many other's I'm seeing, but the edge sharpened BEAUTIFULLY, and I'm hoping Mr. Killir Duck will put up with my humble beginnings.
Stephen

looks awesome to me, wish it'd hurry up and get here ;) got my sheath done, i'll be gone elk hunting for the next 2 weeks so i'll get more pics up and get it in the mail then.
-
Won't be long. Just got to seal up the handle and do my sheath Friday night. Would you PM me your address?
-
I finally got the elk scales on my knife. I will get a pic up as soon as it dries. Now for the long part, making the sheath. By the way, the knives are looking great. It makes me almost ashamed to show mine.
-
Eddie you your stuff is nothing to be ashamed of I wish I was half as good as you are.
-
I got it done, a few lil extras to add and I hope to ship Monday. The sheath is braintan from last year with some Caborn Welborn art off of pottery found in the bottoms around here. It looks old, which is what I went for.
-
Wildman, that looks great. It will go great on my quiver. Here is a few pics of the knife. I still need to shine the handle and seal it. I also have the sheath cut out and ready to get started on. Trapper, I can't help it. I am always very critical about the things I make.

-
Small problem with mine. I have tried 3 times tonight to harden my blade. Cant do it. My forge isnt big enough to hold the entire blade and heat it evenly. I am going to have to start a charcoal fire on the ground to get this thing to harden. Very annoying....
-
Wildman im digging that knife and sheath
madcrow that looks sweeeet
-
got the blade fitted in the handle, got to finish get finished (http://i623.photobucket.com/albums/tt320/bubncheryl/kid%20bow/101_4350_zps2a652afe.jpg) (http://s623.photobucket.com/user/bubncheryl/media/kid%20bow/101_4350_zps2a652afe.jpg.html)
-
i'ot this idea for a rawhide / birch bark sheath, just got to figure out how to do it
-
Nice Bubby I like the way you put the wood on it.
-
Havent posted lately but still working out how to get a good heat treat on this blade.
-
Well I got my trade done will be mailing it out soon can't get the pic. To post sorry guys
-
Are you guys just mailing the knives out in the mail they told me yesterday it's illegal to mail them unless your a business they said because there considered a weapon.
-
I'll be mailing mine out in the mail...
Or more likely FedEx Ground.
-gus
-
i have never had a problem sending one. Of course they have never asked if it was a knife. Usually just ask if it is perishable, explosive, etc.
-
Are you guys just mailing the knives out in the mail they told me yesterday it's illegal to mail them unless your a business they said because there considered a weapon.
Knives are tools. The only knives you are not supposed to send through the mail are switch blades or auto's if it is illegal to carry autos in your area. Tell them to go read their own regulations. All that is required is sufficient packaging.
http://pe.usps.com/text/pub52/pub52c4_toc.htm
You can scroll down to knives and read about it here
-
Post Office knife checker is probably furloughed ;D >:D
-
Now that was funny.... Sometimes the post office workers wanna be apples about what I wanna send. So I just leave, buy packaging elsewhere, and come back with it all wrapped up. They cant ask whats in the box, only what it isnt, explosives etc....
-
EDIT: Below was all written with me very frustrated. Im going to give a go again.... Time aint up yet. Too soon to throw in the towel. Gonna try to build an oil burning forge of significant size.
Sometimes a guy just needs to know when to admit defeat. I cant get it to harden. It must be my forge isnt big enough to heat the blade evenly. Parts will get nice and hard, others... not so much. With all that going on the stresses inside must be terrible and will require multiple normalizing sessions to be sure it wont fail. I dont have the time or the coal for it, nor money to get the coal.
So I am ashamed, and licked. I am sorry I let my trade partner down. So, unless you want the mess I have made, I will send you the knife that was made for me so at least your not left knifeless. It is a very nice knife with a razor edge. Very sorry.... It will be a while before I do any more trade events.
Here is what I have

I was going to do a leather washer handle on it, but I can send with it some handle shingles if you want this at all. I sure hate to send off a project though, considering everybody else is sending off a finished knife.
-
if you have a small propane torch and a kitchen stove with the old style burners (no glass top) you can heat treat the steel. The burner aint hot enough by itself and neither is the propane, but togethr they can take it to a nonmagnetic state. I made a bunch of them like that.
-
got mine ready to ship, (http://i623.photobucket.com/albums/tt320/bubncheryl/kid%20bow/101_4352_zps8fe26651.jpg) (http://s623.photobucket.com/user/bubncheryl/media/kid%20bow/101_4352_zps8fe26651.jpg.html)(http://i623.photobucket.com/albums/tt320/bubncheryl/kid%20bow/101_4351_zps378bf4e0.jpg) (http://s623.photobucket.com/user/bubncheryl/media/kid%20bow/101_4351_zps378bf4e0.jpg.html)
I tried the mustard patina and it was great on one side but I never could get the other close enough for me so I removed it, bub
-
Sleek, Don't worry do yhe best ya can. I'm easy to get along with aslong as you tried. Might I suggest a bag of charcol and an old blow drier. I quit mining last week or I would send ya a bag of coal.
-
Maybe if I am reallllllly bad the rest of the year, santa will come and drop me some coal off....
-
Forging 101. Dont build a forge on your driveway. Mine just blew a crater in it. Now how am I going to explain this to my land lady? Meteorite?
-
mine is shipped and should be there monday
-
got the sheath on mine done i'll try and get it in the mail int the next couple days
-
Shipping out today
-
I received my knife from Kevin and needless to say it is amazing. I've got some pictures and will post soon. Started my sheath yesterday. Mine will be in the mail in the next few days.
-
Just got home and my daughter informed me that I got mail and its cool so I got my knife and its cool nice job looks great Thanks .
-
Here are a couple of pictures from the other day when I received Kevin's knife. What can I say, it's great and I like it very much!
I will be taking it hunting with me in two weeks up to the Green Swamp. Hopefully I can put it to use doing some skinning.
Gratefully,
Stephen Parnell
-
Sweet blade sleek!!
That's one nice knife Parnell!! Ya got lucky!!
dp
-
The more I look at theat Scalping Blade, the more I like it...
:)
-gus
-
Alright, all wrapped up and ready to go.
-
Finally got the knife to harden. Well, all but a small section very near the handle. I am really not sure on how bad that really is. The outer tip is for chopping and will take the most abuse, and hardened very well. The inner, its to be used as a draw knife section and scraper. Being that it will be the most lightly used portion, hopefully its edge will last. I really hope the differentially hardened knife wont fail because of this. Also, there is a slight bend in the blade from the forge. Without sticking it back in there, I am not sure how to correct this. Its not bad, you have to sight down the spine to see it, but it is there, and I am running out of time.
-
nice parnell, I wonder how many are gonna be down to the wire on this
-
nick i mailed the knife to day hope you like it
-
I am still working on this knife. I am doing a leather washer handle and making the washers by hand.... Hopefully done in a day or so. Sorry to be THAT guy....
-
my knife went out on the 10th so should be there in a couple days
-
My Trade knife is done, but I'm still working on the Sheath.
I have the sheath drawn up, just need to transfer it to the the leather and knock it out.
But it may be a few days late going out.
Workbench time has been cut down to a minimum since last Tuesday.
My four year old Orion, has been sick as heck starting Tuesday evening.
Sore throat, ear infection and fever.
Went to the Doctor Wednesday morning, started antibiotics.
Been fighting fever, trying to keep him hydrated and coax him to eat.
Back to doctor today, as this Crud is moving down to his lungs.
Orion now has Pneumonia on one side.
Doctor changed his antibiotics to something stronger.
Feel like I'm about ready to yank my beard off.
I hate the feeling of being Powerless.
I'm sure that lack of sleep isn't helping, on my part.
Thank the Maker my two year old Elyas, hasn't caught this crap yet.
But I will feel a Lot better when Orion levels off and starts getting better.
Lord let it be so.
-gus
-
I pray your son is better soon. I have had that crud in the past and it is no fun. Took me avoer 3 weeks to fully recover. But, kids often bounce back faster than adults do, so hopefully your son will recover quickly.

Well, here is my progress.... Its the best I could do. I really hope this knife holds up for you. The handle is leather washers I made..... then shaped on the bet sander with 36 grit. The ( Pommel? ) is made of a large engine nut that I flattened on the anvil to make it fit the tang and hold the washers in place. I then drilled two holes and peened in two nails to lock the nut in place. A bit of black leather dye on the handle did the trick there.... Now to sharpen the knife and ship it.

Only have to finish the stitching on the sheath of my trade knife to be done.
Will have it in the mail by Friday or sooner.
My boys are finally over the hump and getting better, but now I have this crud.
Went and got two big angry shots at the Doc this am.
Hoping to see this Crud in the rear view mirror ASAP.
