I made this hat a couple weeks ago and completely forgot to post a picture of it. it's all from pine needles. Its good and doesn't fall off at all, but the down side is it took hours upon hours to make and it's a little on the warm side so it will have to wait for slightly cooler weather.
-
You have got to be kidding me! That's insane!
-
Whoa that is freakin cool !
-
That is awesome. Ed
-
might be a market for that
-
That is really cool! I bet that was a lot of work, but it turned out great and is definitely unique!
-
thanks guys, yeah it was a ton of work. wish there was a market for it..unfortunately the time it takes to do one I'd have to ask $200 for it..lol it took many many evenings of work to complete... honestly, I never want to make another again, but I am glad it's done and I now have it! I was looking for some sort of primitive hat idea that would have a brim to block the sun.. this is the best I could come up with. as time goes by I think it will collect trinkets I find in the woods, feathers, teeth...etc
-
That's freaking cool man
-
Can you post another picture where we can clearly see the needles & how they're put together? This is really cool.
-
small bundles are coiled slowely around the whole piece and stitched into each other. youtube "how to make a pine needle basket"
-
@ Twisted - pine needle baskets are fairly new to NDNs. They came along in the 30s or 40s to fill the continued demand for NDN baskets. Try Tule(Scirpus sp.) lots of people make hats from them and they don't require so much work. Looks good though.
-
Neat hat.
-
That is cool, I have tones of pine trees. Will have to check out the videos. I have 5 sons that are always looking for things to learn with natural materials around the property.
-
Holy crap, I was gonna "needle" you about your goofy headgear, but this hat is actually kinda stylin'. Now I feel like a sap for even thinking I could tease you about this. Guess I was barking up the wrong tree.
Instead of riding the pine, the pine is riding you. Way cool hat.
-
I like it a lot. What did you use for string? I've thought about a hat but I know how long that would take so I've kinda put that on the back burner.

Nice job. Very cool hat!
-
That is awesome!
-
thanks much guys. Roger, I hang my head in shame :-[ I used artificial sinew like you did cuz I knew it would stretch and not break. I wanted to make it totally abo, but I knew it was going to be hours upon hours with good thread... just wasn't up for raffia or yucca thread to be constantly replacing.
-
Yeah I use art sinue because it is not going to rot down here. I was thinking if you could get so long fibers out of a century plant leaf it might work.
thanks
-
Pretty sweet hat.
-
Now that is awesome. Nice work!
-
Full points for originality. That's great Ryan!
-
thanks guys!!! Parnell, when I read your post my mind saw "points" are registered with stone points and gave me an idea...lol maybe I should put stone points in it like fishermen do with hooks and flies..lol

That would be perfect! And just to give it that finished look, how about a pinecone on top?
-
Twisted,
you are twisted!!! >:D
That is beyond WOW, and as was mentioned above...STYLIN! 8)

Well now I have to make one.... just gadda figure out where in the to do list this hat falls...
Now about that swimmy thing you have there.... I love shark fishing. I used to live in Tampa and fished all the time. More than I worked even. I bet that hammer head put up one hellova fight! what did you catch him on? How did he taste?
-
yeah a pinecone on top like a tassel would finish it off nicely!
Those little bonnetheads don't fight great, just like a redfish. The blacktips and spinners are the good fighters, they pull drag and usually give an air show. They bonnets taste good, but again the blacktips are where it's at, they taste the best in my opinion too.
-
Leave it up to you to make a pine needle hat Ryan! Pretty cool project I must say.

Pineneedle quiver mebbee???? 8)

Pineneedle quiver mebbee???? 8)
I vote YES!
-
haha no chance on the quiver. I'd love to make one, but it would only take 80 or so hours to complete!!
-
Come on man whats 80 hours to a caveman ;) A quiver would be a long haul I agree.I'm going to try split bamboo
Roger

Lol at least we didnt ask ya to do a canoe build along.
